ultimately it doesn't matter, because the phenomenon causing the debate is the pseudo-cohesive feeling of a solid 'self' being at the center of experiences, which just as emotions and thoughts, aren't capable of giving a realistic-objective view of reality; if a symbol system calls the Absolute God, or the atomic view of the individual a soul, it's just that, syntax and the system's grammar evolved accordingly
