There's been effectively no traffic on or meaningful use of risky.af, so unless anyone disagrees, I am going to nuke it and reinstall it using akkoma rather than mastodon. I've been wanting to try it - I think it has a few of the highly sought-after features like quote-tweets and better search.

@jerry Just keep our beloved 11000 char option and you're golden.

@theghostoftomjoad I’m not intending to change anything on this instance. Though I will say the 11k character limit is pretty unpopular with some people.

@theghostoftomjoad @jerry out of curiosity - what feedback are you getting in that regard? Do you have a lot of users who publish posts that come near that limit?

@knova @theghostoftomjoad I don’t believe we have many instance of people getting close to that. Certainly there have been a few. Most that are longer than 500 are in the 1000-2000 range. I most recently had someone tell me that I was enabling people on Infosec.exchange to “assault” other people because they had no choice by to see the very long post without an option to collapse or skip it.

@jerry @theghostoftomjoad assault seems like a strong choice of word…Thanks for the info. I have my (akkoma) instance set to the default of 5k characters, I’ve never come close to writing something that long on here. I follow a lot of infosec.exchange folks and have not seen walls of text plaguing my timeline.

@knova @jerry I spent the day writing a 1500 word fiction chapter today, with all the formatting and proofreading I am in real pain just from being chained to the screen all day...hardly going to jam the local TL LOL. And I don't see anyone abusing it. That said, I occasionally need >500 just to make my posts clear and easy to read. Why force people to click a link, which always entails a non-zero infosec risk, when you can say what you need here. My one wish would be if I could figure out a way to do markdown and get italics, and bold, etc.

@jerry @theghostoftomjoad find yourself an instance running glitch-soc, or Akkoma, and you will get markdown support and you can see how bold this looks

@jerry Can we have 5 min to turn off redirects to it? Will the new software have the same host name and favicon?

@pauliehedron sure. I suspect it’ll be next weekend before I do anything with it.

@jerry Cool, thanks for having it. Turned off the redirects and started a move of followers. Was very interesting see how much LESS content you can see on a small instance without a relay. It's a completely different fedi experience, much like it was in 2017. Looking a thread and you see the poster and your reply, but looking at the same thread on I.E or the original server has dozens of replies. It was quite shocking and not sure people realize how much they could be missing when saying mastodon is quiet.

@pauliehedron indeed. Also, I added it to our activitypub relay, which meant it was as even more active than a small instance without a relay
