Thousands of archivists and librarians over here gesticulating *yes, finally, we've been saying this for a decade+*

In some ways, maybe it's fine, but also maybe it's not. However the broadsides and pamphlets metaphor is a good one (and one I'm pretty sure I've heard at least one archivist use before)

And since the top of the thread is getting a lot of eyes, I'll reiterate the above, that 100% capture and preservation is not what librarians and archivists have all been wanting when they've made these observations.Ephemerality can be good! Some things should come and go.But the idea that things are online so they're stable and permanent and LESS volatile than a book has been... a real bane for a lot of us.

@platypus Weren’t the shelves of a books-only library circa 1985 pruned in the same way?

@wndlb no. We weed print based on use and space, which is certainly its own loss.We lose digital because of a) negligence from publishers, b) publishers/hosts going under, but primarily c) things never being preserved in the first place and our inability to afford access to lots of content we'd like even at well-resourced institutions. Journalists have seen whole back catalogs disappear offline and not been saved properly, etc.

@platypus @wndlb yep yepIf something isn't in a library, it's not there for a bunch of reasons/problems/constraints that are quite different from "our online company fell apart and went offline"

@platypus As someone who collects devices from the early 2000s, when a lot of software was already starting to be distributed online only, yes, it's almost all gone without a trace. Sure, you might find the occasional forum post _referring_ to it, but all the links are long, long dead. Just as I've also seen videos I've been actively watching disappear without a trace. I try really hard to archive anything important to me, as I know it's current source will dry up.....*grumble grumble* "DMCA" mother f... *grumble grumble* "DRM" bullsh... *grumble*

@platypus @wndlb d) it's 'archived' on youtube and that's good enough until the channel is abruptly deleted over some long-retroactive censorship unrelated to the video in question

@ChristiJunior @platypus Audio and video of Hitler's recorded speeches used to be easy to find on YouTube and many other sites, often with translations too. Now it is very hard to find them, especially with Google.

@platypus I have a PDF copy of a journal article from 1996 discussing the moral panic over bisexual women in lesbian spaces that almost perfectly tracks the moral panic over trans women in women's spaces. ('Bisexual Women and the "Threat" to Lesbian Space: Or What If All the Lesbians Leave?') Sometimes, like here, it's obvious a thing is worth preserving: it shows that if history doesn't repeat, it at least rhymes.Other times it's hard to know. If you don't keep everything, there's no second chance if it turns out to be important later. It's just gone. It's something I've struggled with as my capacity to store things and make them searchable falls behind my ability to accumulate and cull things that don't seem important in the moment.

@platypus @davidisen I was enjoying this thread until you ruined it.1. Don't flash badges. Never say "I have a Whatever Degree in Whatever Science." That doesn't mean squat in the real world. Instead, expose your point of view or GTFO.2. Don't assume the other party knows less than you like you just did. Especially bragging about how much you think you know. You may know a lot less than you think.Maybe you archive a lot of stuff but seldom read any. You certainly don't seem to be wise.

@platypus More than a decade ago I wrote an essay on the internet's bitrot problem, the irony being that today none of the referenced urls exist any more. This is one reason why any online references had to be included in the appendix of essays submitted to my University, three points were deducted if not included.I thought that silly at the time, not so much anymore.

@platypus @davidisen admittedly I just taught a long-time MLS librarian about IA last month, but in 2014 I taught a computer science prof about Kevin Mitnick (who, by the way, has an intensely cringe Twitter avatar), so there's always someone. Academic and tech librarians, though-- generally assume we know about it!

@platypus And meanwhile, pirates are better at archival than actual librarians...It's almost like libraries forgetting things are a solid argument for copying floppies.
