@ai@cawfee.club @satanasur@cawfee.club my field is cognitive science (like experimental psychology) so actually the thesis is not really about music itself but rather how people communicate for teaching purposes (and i chose music because i play the piano and know some stuff)i was mainly interested in how people change their playing when they have the intention to teach compared to when they perform their best - in both cases, you need to demonstrate your skills but with different intentions. what i found is that basically pianists exaggerated specific aspects of their performance when they try to teach

@mametsuko @satanasur Thank you for the explanation. I took a few piano lessons once so it's interesting to look back at that experience in light of what you wrote. I often see people on the internet (especially reddit) saying "Baby talk isn't good. You should talk to your baby just like any adult, because hearing normal english will help them learn normal english obviously." I always thought this was not quite right. Of course going "goo goo gaa gaa" to amuse yourself is not gonna help your baby. But surely it helps to show a "simplified code" by exaggerating your intonation and emotion in some kind of baby talk. Your finding seems related to this and has got me thinking about what "baby talk in music" would be.

@ai@cawfee.club @satanasur@cawfee.club yes yes exactly! of course in actual lessons, teachers use multiple communication channels like gestures and language so exaggeration is not the only thing - but as you said, people naturally translate their intention to some systematic patterns (like baby talk), which seems to help babies understand complex structures of language (and music and actions etc.)thank you for sharing your thoughts :)

@mametsuko @satanasur Pretty incredible that we naturally know how to communicate in these "baby talk" modalities, despite having never been taught and being unable to answer what exactly we are doing. You're helping me realize that "teaching" is interesting because it forces us to break down our codes in a way that we maybe couldn't do consciously. Of course, there are good teachers and bad teachers and lord knows there's plenty of bad teachers. But it's cool to think that there's a natural 'teaching instinct', a built-in way to introspect into our abilities.

@mametsuko @satanasur Makes me wonder if this is part of why people say that the best way to understand something is to teach it to others.

@ai@cawfee.club @satanasur@cawfee.club also teaching is not about teachers actually. learners (like babies) have tendencies to attend to some social cues (like baby talk or human faces). exaggeration or other communicative actions (e.g., pointing, eye contact) seem to be beneficial for learners to learn some cultural knowledge (like music) but also we learn a lot from observation as well (so as far as i understand, vision is mainly developed by picking up statistical regularities, rather than what your parents teach)oops i am going too much maybe, but thanks :D

@mametsuko @satanasur @ai > what i found is that basically pianists exaggerated specific aspects of their performance when they try to teachIt's fun to see such mechanism not only in biological mechanism but also in psyche.
