i hate superhero movies but my 2 cents on why all these female superhero movies and stuff keep flopping and widely suck is because they're totally hollow and inorganic and exist solely to be the token "strong girl character" thing. i don't think people dislike female protagonists, they just need to be organic and written organically with real backstories and stuff and exist for themselves vs. exist towards an agenda. a couple scifi movies i can think of immediately with very likable and very strong female protagonists, for example, would be alien, contact, and arrival. none of these characters existed to be strong girlbosses---they just existed as the main protagonists and they had organic, normal-human-being backstories and character fleshing out. they weren't mary sues or whatever the term is called. you could have swapped any of these female leads out for male leads and the story would still work and be just as good and enthralling, because the story *wasn't* centered around them being women WOW STRONG GIRLBOSS. the story itself was just altogether solid and the characters, male or female, were written to be believable normal people in extraordinary scenarios and i don't think ever once their gender or sex came up as a central or important or pivotal plot point or story arc.

@kino You know, I've commented on this before, but I stand behind it. The female leads in these movies aren't like a proper movie, tv, or book character. They're like a video game character where you're the silent protagonist with the story happening around you. You only exist to be a vessel for the player, and you can do everything you will need to do to succeedI grew up on horror and sci-fi, there were plenty of great female characters because they were actually characters.

@kino > alienI think that's my go-to example for "completely believable female protagonist", the other is is Sarah Connor in Terminator 2. (It is a pretty believable transition given what happened in the first movie.)> written to be believable normal people in extraordinary scenariosHallmark of good writing.sarah-connor-gif-6.gif

@SavageGerbil@leadslinger.org almost all other well-liked stories probably come from the beginning premise of an interesting plotline or scenario or concept or world, etc., whereas these failing strong female movies suck because the writers start the entire concept of the story from "strong girlboss character" as the entire premise and then everything else is draped ontop of that. the plot, the world, the characters, everything centers around the agenda of "need a strong female protagonist WHO DON'T TAKE SHIT FROM NO MAN" vs., rather, having the protagonist draped around a story or scenario or world.for example, take alien, for simplicity sake. i don't think the writers started out going:"Okay, STRONG WOMAN WHO KICKS ASS... now let's think up a story that can center around that"I think, rather, they started out going:"Okay, neat concept...an alien weaking havoc on a spaceship deep out in space and the crew having to fight for their survival."And then everything else sprung out from that.

@SavageGerbil@leadslinger.org for example, think any other classic movie that was successful---not because of the characters themselves, per-say, but the plot. I think you could have replaced the main protagonist in Jaws with a female lead and it would still work, assuming the actors were solid and still delivered striking performances. Chief Brody being a male or a female has zero bearing on the story or plot itself. Granted, Jaws is a novel, and I'm against retconning pre-existing works and stuff.. but just as an example.Another great movie with a female protagonist: Hannibal

@kino Alien is such a good example that people have started writing off the example as "clliche" as if that meant it was untrue. No, it just means it's a settled matter that you're wrong lol.

@kino Brody could certainly work, but I think Hoop gender swapped would absolutely work, and frankly he's an example of how to do a woman right. He was treated and regarded the same way you'd default to a stereotyped female character. He's viewed as soft, an academic. He deals with it, he gets shit done, he shows his competence, without standing on a table and going "fuck you, cap, see? I'm better than you." He folds into the pack because he can, it's not how the films we're bitching about workI love Starling. I liked book-Starling more, but both were awesome

@kino Now Alien I love, and it's something we seldom do right anymore. Ripley is distinctly feminine, wonderfully so, though not stereotypical. The job she's doing is essentially construction worker or oil rigger type work. It's mining, but it's heavy equipment based. They don't have to make her a caricature in either case, making her feminine or making her tough, she just is. That is a character done right
