She seethed at Management, who no doubt had their reasons for sidelining her. After all, Management lived 100 years in the future and had already read the after-action reports from every iteration of the mission. There had to be a reason she was here, now; and it wasn't to get drunk on girlie cocktails. Well, OK, one sip wouldn't hurt.

@cattailnuYou never know whether this is the mission that succeeds, the final iteration; but the odds are its a failure mission designed to furnish Management with a piece of info they otherwise lacked.Honestly, Sam's job sucks because a lot of her die, get badly maimed, imprisoned, etc. But according to Management all those iterations are washed away and when all is said and done, Sam is guaranteed to come out of it whole and healthy and free.That's assuming you believe what Management says, which is impossible to verify.

@cattailnu It hung on his office wall, not visible from the dooorway, but just above his computer. Every morning he fetched a coffee and sat sipping it, but tasting those drinks from their Bali trip. Their dream vacation was delayed 25 years for Misty and Rob. It finally happened at the insistence of the kids. Sheri had snapped the photo their first day. She was gone now 3 years. He didn't dwell on her last months, remembering only the woman that took the photo and painted this, for him.
