My #gaming goal for 2023 is to finish 12 story-driven games and at least write down some thoughts about each one. Reasons: 1) I have immense backlog shame.2) I'm tired of starting a new game and then being lured away by the newest shiny release.3) I can cruise through one "main" game per month, and still add some variety to the mix with non-story games like Vampire Survivors, multiplayer FPS titles, etc. 4) I just really miss good stories in games. ❓ So, what should I play this year?

@gigi I've tried for YEARS to get into various MMOs, and I just can't do it. FFXIV came the closest, though. It's just about the time commitment and subscription costs (when I'm subscribed to something I feel pressured to ONLY play that, and I want to experience a lot of different games)

@killyourfm Beste story, best music, best glamours and emotes, best raids and dungeons, insane amount of content, every 2 years an expansion and 5 major content patches in between. Just have to work past A Realm Reborn, the entry level. To me it is worth the 11 euro's a month without having to buy anything else. But I love MMO's and the social interaction with others in the guild and group events :)

@killyourfm I picked up "Surviving The Aftermath" on sale a week or so ago and some Cities: Skylines expansions, so I think my 2023 is mostly going to be MOAR PARADOX GAMES 😂 I'll be interested to see how you get on though, as I have an XBOX Game Pass that I'm currently just using to play old 360 games, so I should play new linear titles.

@killyourfm I wasnt all that into it when it was released. But I gave it another try in 2019 and here I am: still hooked and still learning new things. I am not even close to finishing all content. :) I like how I can play this game casual and do high end stuff also. Some days I just hang around, listing to the bands that come preform in Limsa. Other days I trying my hand at the latest raids or unreal trials. :)

@killyourfm I worked on this back in the day: https://store.steampowered.com/app/65080/Kaptain_Brawe_A_Brawe_New_World/By this time I was more working on "backend" stuff (porting to iOS/Mac, preparing various releases...) rather than the content, but it was fun to see the art style and ridiculousness of the characters come to life.I'm yet to do a full playthrough myself... I think I didn't even complete Legend of Crystal Valley end-to-end despite having my fat fingers touch most of the scenes in LoCV. And when I recently started LoCV, I could see so many typoes and grammar mistakes... Still, it was good fun making it. Kaptain Brawe was much nicer in that regard, and the German version even has voiceovers (publishers can be an amazing thing sometimes).@silo64

@killyourfm I spent the time to play and finish Red Dead 2. Well worth my investment. Old school System Shock 2 was cool. Metal Gear Solid 5 the Phantom Pain was spectacular. DISCO ELYSIUM! This game changed my life. Seriously. Finally, Kingdom Come Deliverance was excellent as well.

@killyourfm I'm definitely finding that. This has been my first year of real gaming in over 20 years. The Steam Deck has made me a gamer all over again, and more than I ever have been before. I've spent the year discovering what types of games I really dig into, and what kinds just don't work for me, and I'm still figuring it out. I did play Witcher 3 all the way through (main story, not 100%, few side quests) on my Steam Deck, which was a huge accomplishment for me.

@killyourfm Disco Elysium is one of the best CRPGs I've played. It's right up there with Planescape: Torment.I haven't played the enhanced version with voiced dialog and additional content yet, but I really want to. 🤩I'd say it's easily the best game out of these four, but on the other hand, the amount of story (as in text) is not for everyone. If you've enjoyed other CRPGs like Baldur's Gate or Divinity: Original Sin, chances are good you'll really dig it.

@killyourfm I really have to revisit it, I got about 3/4 of the way through but you need time to immerse yourself in the story but college, work and life in general meant I'd get like 10 minutes here or there but forget what I was supposed to be doing. Maybe if I get a deck I'd be able to do it more on the go

@shanefagan Isn't that the absolute worst symptom of walking away from a game for awhile? It's like you develop a sort of gameplay amnesia. There are SO many RPGs I've sunk hours into and then abandoned, because when I came back I either couldn't remember what I was supposed to be doing, or lost the muscle memory (in the case of more complicated action games).

@killyourfm Yeah for sure, it's one of those games that isn't easy to pick back up. Like I loved every second of it but when you walk away for too long you lose track of what you were doing, who you were talking to, what character you were going for.

@killyourfm Understandable! You used to put out a lot of stuff then - no wonder you needed a change!Three come to mind from the top of my head:- Rigs of Rods was a success for a while with myself and the kids. There's all kinds of mods and vehicles from the community available for it.- 0 AD is an enjoyable Age of Empires-style RTS.- The Dark Mod is good too. If you enjoyed the Thief FPS games back in the day, then this might get you in. Very well done.

@killyourfm I'm 15h into disco elysium but I have so many regrets that I think I will start over.Because unlike other RPGs, do not click on every answer just to know what the characters will say. Because some of them has bad consequences. That is one thing that makes this game great. Some things you question can even lead to game over if asked at the wrong time. Good luck!

@marxistvegan I've played about 90m of it today and it just works (Kubuntu 22.04, Proton Next). I was remarking to someone else earlier that Proton has become so solid, I've stopped wondering if single player game is going to work!
