"Valve has spent nearly a year and over 100 updates showing that an early access game console can actually be worth money. Valve has finally succeeded in proving doubters wrong about Linux, creating a gadget thatβs spent 35 weeks atop the Steam bestseller list and attracted support from Sony, Microsoft and more. In my eyes, this was a triumph: a dark horse that will shape the gaming landscape for years to come."π π π https://www.theverge.com/23513517/steam-deck-long-term-test-valve#SteamDeck #Linux #Gaming #Proton #Valve

@killyourfm It is pretty fantastic. Then again, I pretty much loved it day one and it has only become more convenient since.

@killyourfmI'm hoping with the success of steam deck publishers will make native linux ports of AA and AAA titles in the future. The lack of native Ports is the reason why i'm still using windows on my Gaming PC.@seanhollister

@the_white_wolf are you sure that the lack of native binary is the showstopper? There are some native Linux games out there and in the majority of cases I switch to Windows binary through Proton because it works better that way. I am not joking, but let's put that convoy aside for a sec. My Linux challenge is FOMO, mostly. I have fear of missing out on Destiny and VR games... (Oculus user)@killyourfm @seanhollister

@darth @the_white_wolf @seanhollister Yea, we no longer live in a world where native Linux ports are needed. There's honestly no reason for developers/studios to invest extra time and money into creating native Linux ports, when they can just ensure their games work well with Proton.

@the_white_wolf @killyourfm @seanhollister perhaps there are still benefits to native that I'm not aware of, but I play a lot of PC VR and my setup, unfortunately, does not work without Windows 10. So that's the space I am watching. There is a rumor that Valve will copy Oculus Quest concept, but I'm not holding my breath.

@killyourfm @darth @the_white_wolf @seanhollister One huge advantage of targeting Proton I only recently came to realize is that it's a "predictable" platform, whereas "native Linux" is the wild west - a "classic" distro like Ubuntu is providing a very different environment for both developers and games than, let's say, NixOS ... and that's not even accounting for different *versions* of system components across distros (and time).

@killyourfm @darth @the_white_wolf @seanhollister I think it should be possible to create a "standard" Linux platform that game developers can target, though - similarly to the freedesktop flatpak runtime, which almost all flatpak apps rely on under the hood. Maybe the freedesktop flatpak runtimes (plus some game-specific extensions, like SDL2 or stuff like that) could even be that standard environment for native Linux game development? No need to reinvent the wheel, after all π

@killyourfm @seanhollister 7 years+This journey started with the ill fated Steam Machine and Valve effectively shafting dozens of Hardware vendors.Kudos to Valve for taking the risk of creating the Hardware themselves, though suspect there was little choice with that.

@killyourfmFor me native ports are still needed. As far as i know Raytracing came very late to Linux (compared to windows).HDR Support gone experimental recently. Windows has this since Win 10.Direct Storage seems to start this year, too. I don't know whether Linux supports that.On Windows i know it exactly.Of course i know mostly volunteers work on wine/mesa/proton and for that they have my biggest respect. @darth @seanhollister

@killyourfm @seanhollister One annoying thing I've noticed: If you pause the Steam Deck with a game running, the pause time will add to playtime of that game. Have you seen this, is there a fix?

@ehallen @seanhollister Ah, do you mean putting the Deck into Standby? No, I haven't seen a fix for that. I wonder if you have @Sirsquid?

@killyourfm @ehallen @Sirsquid I thought that it recalculated to correct your playtime afterwards. Pretty sure Iβve seen it add 12 hours upon resume and then go back to a sane number after a few seconds

@killyourfm now I feel slightly less bad for impulse buying a Deck last night. π
I love Linux, but I'm definitely not much of a gamer. Maybe this little thing will change that. π

@amxmln I suspect it will change that! And if it doesn't, you still got one hell of a capable PC in your hands. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts as you start using it.

@the_white_wolf @killyourfm @seanhollister That reminds me that I still have a Windows partition on my computer, just for the time when I want to play "that nice game", that doesn't work with SteamOS. Last time I turned it on, was about half year ago. Instead of switching to Windows I find it easier to play another game.
