Did you make the too-many-chickens-to-start-with mistake? I bought 12 when I started, lost two, then all I did was give eggs away forever lol. However I had a lot of easy protein on hand all the time, that was nice.

We initially bought one of those 'backyard duck' assortments, which was a baker's dozen. Claire fell in love with those birds so fast I ordered some call ducks and geese the next year. Then we got incubators. We sell them, but it's almost more of a hobby. We've made our own cross breeds like pastel mallards and ring-necked harlequins

Feed isn't cheap, so it almost evens out. They'll get a lot of nutrients from grazing on grass, but eventually they completely destroy the ground they live on, and the grass wont grow back unless you relocate them to some other area
