It's awesome to see @Thunderbird make Tech Radar's Best #opensource software of 2023 list (yes, I'm biased 😂)BUT...This list feels a little too easy, doesn't it? I would have included some less "obvious" but important stuff like Valve's #Proton, for example. Not only because of its impact on Linux gaming, but because 100s of open source devs are getting paid to work on it, which rocks! Or great CMS platforms like #Wordpress or #Hugo. What about you?https://www.techradar.com/best/best-open-source-software

@killyourfm Might be how i'm reading this, but shouldn't it be "of 2022" (since 2023 has barely started) or "for 2023"? Nitpick... but congrats and I agree I think this list could maybe have targeted a few of the less "obvious" (although as a #WordPress person I think that might be too popular and an "obvious" too)?

@killyourfm @thunderbird Oh man, they try really hard to find "reasons to avoid":- Libre Office: no cloud integration. Yes, because you cannot have this free or without privacy intrusion. - Gimp: May confuse first time user. I grew up with computers and Photoshop confused me very, very much until today. That would be the reason to avoid every software more complex than Paint. - ... :blobcatcoffee:

@killyourfm @thunderbird I like the list. Casting it as software "for everyday tasks," makes me think of office or home end-users. Yes there are surely other biz, edu, & dev tools to include; but maybe not in this category? The software listed can be installed on a PC or Mac just like home/office users do now. The list, IMO, provides familiar "gateway apps" to help introduce alternatives to those new to #opensource.I also like #Linux listed last; "If you like those, why not try a new OS?"

@massonpj @thunderbird Perhaps I'm being a bit too snobby :DI like that you're viewing these as gateway apps. Gateway apps are crucial to introducing people to the concept of open source. In fact, Audacity was my gateway app way back when!

@killyourfm I also love their use of the term "Increasingly accessible" as a reason to use Linux in the number 10 spot. Linux really is becoming more and more viable by the month for "normal people" to switch. I argue it's already there, but not everyone is me.

@killyourfm @thunderbird This is a terrible list!(5) is Brave, which promotes a bullshit crypto coin (Basic Attention Token). Firefox is a much better choice here.(7) is KeePass, which is Windows only. KeePassXC is a better recommendation as it is more portable.(9) is FileZilla, which has bundled adware with the Windows installer and should not be recommended. WinSCP is a good alternative.(I realise I'm criticizing a pointless online list but this is the sort of thing that leads new users astray)

@killyourfm @thunderbird Crazy how they skipped on Firefox. Also how having no mobile app is a con for Audacity lol? Looks like Audacity seemed too flawless to them.

@RyunoKi @tenacity @massonpj Audacity never introduced any "privacy invading" stuff. IIRC, it was telemetry, which is absolutely necessary for developers.

@killyourfm @RyunoKi @massonpj While there was a PR to add telemetry to Audacity, it never got merged due to the controversy it attracted. Anonymous error reporting was added instead. No personal info is collected. Therefore, there was never telemetry in Audacity. However, there were other controversies too, namely their (at the time) new privacy policy (concerns over possible GPL violations were raised) and CLA, where not everyone was happy with that either.

@tenacity @RyunoKi @massonpj Thank you for very clearing describing how that all went down. And now, I'm going to take a look at Tenacity since I kinda prefer modern interfaces :D

@killyourfm a bit surprised there's no mention of Firefox, instead they put "yet another Chromium skin".Also, I'd prefer KeePassXC instead of Keepass (unrelated: their own link to the "KeePass review" is to a review of KeePassXC instead?).Finally, I see a lot of them have "no cloud connectivity" as a minus, which is strange considering one of the main selling points of FOSS is being "local first" (plus, in a lot of scenarios you can substitute "cloud" with something like Syncthing).
