@clive This is really really cool and it makes me think a lot about how we seem to be moving more towards such a model regarding human thought, that they are not simply inside the brain only, but a summary, maybe, of all the ways our nervous systems interact with the world.

@IzabelaKaramia Lol yesI've written a bunch about the "extended mind" thesis -- how we use the world around to support our cognitionAndy Clark's "Natural Born Cyborgs" is a great exploration of this

@clive @anildash you do though! All humans (and other creatures) use their environment for cognitive tasks… it just seems weird because of Cartesian conventions, but embodied cognition theory flips that on its head

@hadarbatjoyce A bit like that -- but also like all the things we use to externalize our cognition: Paper, desks, stickies, books, objects around us

@panamared27401 In one sense, we already do!I leave books/magazines lying around partly -- if only semi-consciously -- because they wind up serving as triggers to "ooohh yeah I meant to look at that"Older folks regularly leave their pill bottles in the center of the kitchen table: Their physical presence is a reminder to take themOur houses are, really, enormous memory palaces -- we put things in the same place partly to ease cognitive load

@clive Well, NEAT people put things in the same place. 🙂 Seriously, as an older folk myself, I keep my meds not only in one place (the DR table) but also in a particular order, to help me remember, without having to look at the labels all the time, which are for morning, which are for night, and which are for both.

@clive I take so many meds, and some of them are so large, that standard-sized pillboxes -- even one for morning and one for night won't do. I have to open each individual bottle. I'm trying to hack a solution to that problem, but it hasn't been near the top of my priorities list.

@panamared27401 @clive Have a conversation with primary care provider on which ones you don't really need, for starters. Secondly...local pharmacy may be able to either bubblepack for you OR have different boxes for you to try.

@CMDoran @clive Oh, I've talked with my PCP, my cardiologist, my allergist and my p-doc about all of them, and I'm stuck with them, thanks mainly to heredity. But it's a good suggestion; a lot of Americans ARE overmedicated. My sis-in-law's mom has a form of dementia and had gone really downhill in recent months. Then a new PCP took her off one of her meds, and she got DRAMATICALLY better, with no ill effects. She's still going downhill, but MUCH more slowly now.

@CMDoran @clive Re overmedication, for the milllions of Americans with anxiety, a study just published in JAMA indicates that 8 weeks of mindfulness exercises are statistically just as effective as Lexapro (escitalopram, which I take), the first-line Rx for treating anxiety. I've always thought mental exercises like this were just woo, but this isn't the first study to indicate that they really do help, so Imma give it a try. Also, nothing says you can't do both and get even better results.
