Little FYI: 'Your' #Discord server is not yours, not in the slightest ALL Discord servers are hosted on machines owned and managed by Discord, there's nothing from you there. Only your personal data :ablobwink:

@ScriptFanix Exactly :blobcatgiggle: But in this case people often speak of 'their Discord server' while this is completly untrue

@stux agree. Discord seems to pretend to be a personal server or even a Fediverse entity in many folks' headcanons

@stux I recently heard/learned this. And Slack can rgjtb? Is there really no paid option to own a Discord server? That's insane. Really a big factor for businesses choosing between Slack and Discord.

@stux Slack must promise businesses something contractually / control wise though because businesses (or at least startups I've worked at) LOVE it

@stux @ScriptFanix I think this is actually the cause of a significant amount of confusion with mastodon newbies about "picking a server" and I hate that they've screwed up the nomenclature.

@stux @Jdreben With Discord at least the difference is that it's not owned by Salesforce (unlike Slack that's being overtaken deeply to the corporate culture of Salesforce).Upside of Slack is that it's more socially acceptable to use in corporate environments. Downside is exactly the same.

@stuxYeah! As I said before, first time I heard of discord servers, I thought it was some free software, cause you know, if everybody have their server... Then I realised the horrifying truth: it's a big fat corporate lie!

@stux I've read their privacy policy a few years back. It basically said 'All your base are belong to us'.It said all data they can lay their fingers on, they can share with anybody they want. I didn't see any exclusion.I decided to not ever use their videochat or any other services.

@stux Certainly, but that's the model that you want most general users to adopt as it comes with no financial nor legal liabilities. If someone's Discord server gets a DMCA complaint then that goes to Discord's copyright agent, instead of the "owner" of the server being personally liable. Which is something that a *LOT* more people running personal Mastodon servers need to be aware of.

@stux @ScriptFanix Indeed, but ... man, "instance" is just a more abstract computer-toucher term. Even if not entirely accurate, "server" has this nice connotation of "a specific computer thats plugged in over there."Have you thought about styling mstdn.social at all? I've wondered if differentiating instances so they don't all look the same would help, even if its just a color scheme. Some way to reinforce "these are separate websites even if they do the same stuff."

@stuxIn the documentation team at HAProxy, there was a discussion on when to use "server", "node" and "instance". The consensus was that "instance" refer to the process running and "node" referred to the machine running it. In our context, "server" refers to backend servers actually serving content and doing the hard work@unlofl

@stux Also a remidner that Discord is bad for privacy and that you should be using @signalapp for private conversations and @matrix for anything you would use a Discord server for.

@stux that’s why I was surprised to hear that developer chat for mastodon is a discord server. Is there another primary forum for mastodon operators to work together?

@stux I tried #Discord and hated it so much. It was so overwhelming. I specially looked for my dearest hobby that I love so much and I could not stay more than two days. Never understood how people like it or even used it for. Communication there is so bizarre, unnatural and disorganized. Please any discord evangelist do not reply with tips. After trying the fediverse I'm never going back to stuff like Discord.

@stux Discord calling their guilds "servers" wouldn't be legal in a society with a functioning regulatory system and I'll be forever salty that they've fucked up an entire generation of internet users by blurring the line between "group chat" and "machine you own".
