I am new to my own Mastodon instance at Boles.xyz and my site is managed by Hugo at @mastohost -- Hugo is super fun and really patient and always available. I love a managed instance because I can primarily concentrate on content. When I ask Hugo a question about how to Admin my server, he is polite and says, "Well, you could do that, but you may have unintended consequences."Hugo has used that phrase so often with me that I think my new street name should be "Unintended Consequences."

@david @mastohost I have often thought that anyone in any responsible position should have to take at least a basic programming course to teach them respect and awareness for unintended consequences and their own innate inability to predict them.

@khoji @mastohost Well said!I have learned in certain contexts, "unintended consequences" often means, politely, "Don't do THAT!"

@david @mastohost That may also translate as, “I don’t currently have the time or energy to enumerate how and through what convoluted paths that idea is guaranteed to eventually come around and bite you in the ass.”

@khoji @mastohost Yes! Ha!I have eventually learned to "not touch that" -- because I've made too many bad technical decisions in the past to not know now that those who know know better than I know!

@karl @mastohost 100% agree. Some people offer services just to make money and others are in business to make the world better. Knowing the difference is the key to a good life.
