I'm making a genuine effort to give #PC #Gaming (specifically talking about my nice tower PC) another chance, but it just keeps punching me in the face. After 19 hours of running flawlessly on my #Linux install, Uncharted 4 just started freezing during the loading screen. Verified the files, tried various versions of Proton, nothing works. The same save loads up just fine on my #SteamDeck -- but this is a game I want to experience at 4K with all the bells and whistles.

@killyourfm proton is REALLY impressive but it can still be rough around the edges.Honestly give it some time, it is worth it

@ljs Believe me, I'm a #Proton evangelist! Valve launched it about the same time I switched to Linux and I've championed it ever since. I'm not really putting the blame on Linux, Steam, or Proton here. It's just frustrating because this kind of stuff keeps happening to me (on Windows too) which is why I made Xbox my primary gaming platform last year. But I can't resist that pull back to PC.

@killyourfm yeah, it is painful and I spent YEARS only gaming on console for exactly this 'ok I don't want the ballache' reason.Steam deck helps mitigate that a lot (valve are so smart) because devs/publishers want stuff to 'just work'.I mean there's no shame in using a console too, it's just nice to be able to play mousey keyboard games from desktop and stay in linux the whole time + mods + ofc maxing out settings.

@killyourfm I’m sure you’ve already checked protonDB. But it might be best to stick with experimental as the latest report shows that working best. https://www.protondb.com/app/1659420 I know for a few other games like Elden Ring it merely takes persistence. I had to start that game at least 7 times before it would actually load properly. It’s always freeze on startup but one time, it worked! Good luck!

@vvbudh It's crazy how different people's experiences can be! Like I said, 19 hours straight across a week of playing and it worked flawlessly! Then this...I'm grateful I can pick it right up on Steam Deck though, and it runs really well there!

@vvbudh @killyourfm I had the same experience with Steamdeck Elden Ring. It seems to have calmed down a bit now, but when I first got it a month ago I was have to restart it four or five times.

@davetansley @vvbudh It can be kind of perilous -- for all of Valve's brilliant efforts, any minor update from the developer can break something on Proton.

@killyourfm @davetansley not to mention Steam itself! Steam’s beta update leaked X clients the other week and by golly, it about ruined me! I almost switched off to Fedora or something else!

@memnoch_proxy Oh yea, I've tried all the troubleshooting 101 stuff.Weirdly, once I advanced the story a bit on my Steam Deck, I came back to the PC and it loaded up normally again. Bizarre!
