people on the orange site talking about this today: https://cyberscript.devkinda interesting. i wonder why people don't just try and build a faster LuaJIT, given that there's already an insanely developed ecosystem and tooling to support it. seems weird to put so much energy and effort into something incompatible that does basically the same thing

@hckr yeh i would still rather use lua because it has packages for everything and links to everything

@hckr have you tried to make a faster luajit? kinda hard to improve they are already really good.

@Moon @hckr actually cyber looks interesting maybe i will add it to my rss fees  nim has also been trying to implement the ARC and basic lifetime tracing stuff going on lately. odd part is that memory model is not new it just got forgot about for like 20 years.

@icedquinn @Moon @hckr i want a language with better syntax but can still use the ecosystem, like an elixir to erlang but atop luajit

@Moon @hckr i usually find right wing news sources to be near-completely technologically illiterate so at best jones et all are good for monitoring the ongoing degradation of society or hearing about things that i should consider going and reading about from somebody who actually understands whatever it is.useful springboards (esp. since the massive far left bias everywhere online; i don't need to ever read CNN everyone on fedi will always be on about whatever those talking points are) but not really useful as a primary source.

@icedquinn @Moon i dont like the nim case-insensitivity thing. some_thing and somethin_G and S_omething are all the same variable in nim. that's insane.

@icedquinn @Moon yeah until he makes another insane decision and borks everything. idk. too risky for me, since nim is trying to bill itself a serious language and not just a scripting tool, i'd rather see some proper leadership, proper corporate sponsorship and consulting, etc. missing the mark on the fundamentals is historically a huge red flag and a leading indicator of failure

@hckr @Moon @jeff cyber's adoption of ARC with escape analysis optimization might make it a better memory citizen though. janet and lua rely on tracing. not that lua's GC is typically the problem but still.

@icedquinn @Moon @jeff it’s much nicer to program in while being on top of Lua. Pattern matching, compile (well, transpile) time macros, and sexprs just make it cozy. It’s not meant to be a big production language because Lua isn’t meant to be a big production language.
