The Fediverse, specifically, Mastodon, has become a new home for me. One place where I don't have to worry about an algorithm quashing my thoughts, or facing hostility for speaking my mind.I reached out to the admin of my instance, asking about extending post lengths. I keep having to pause my thoughts to reply to my own post to complete a thought. It's a bit of a pain, given how this is one place I feel safe sharing this, and *connecting* with others.(continued lol)

I joined another instance with a longer post limit (1024 characters vs 500 here)But my reach is all on this account. A couple musing posts got a lot more followers, and while I'd love to just keep posting silly musings, I have a lot of more serious things I want to share, too.I don't think I get microblogging. It's damn near impossible to cram a coherent thought into 500 characters; less with a content warning.

Mastodon instance owners/moderators reading this - PLEASE consider extending your character limits. I'm still going to try to say all that needs said, but to do it, I'm creating a slew of new, connected records in the database, and then people are boosting those snippets, to share the whole thing - People can still microblog with a character limit of a few thousand characters, Their habits won't change, or have to.But loquacious folks like me, will have room to share a full thought in one go.

@sasha_strange@tech.lgbt have you considered something like writefreely? it still uses activitypub so you can share it with your fedi account, but it's a much better place for longer form content, and even supports edits (even though they don't propagate through activitypub). you can see how it works for me at my writefreely :) https://writefreely.bubbletea.dev/@shibao

@sasha_strange The problem is that extending the character limit is a hack and not officially supported. Which means it could easily break if you update. What we really need is a fully supported #featurerequest in mastodon itself. I can easily imagine options in Preferences to set the limit.
