Here's my belated take. Modern algebraic geometry adopts the stance that a space, such as a sphere, is not ontologically "real" but rather "virtual". Its existence is simulated through a consensus among all possible rings, analogous to how state machine replication in distributed computing seeks to simulate a "virtual" machine across many real (but faulty or incomplete) servers. If you accept this viewpoint, then why not simulate a wider assortment of spaces, even ones that "cannot physically exist"? One example is that you can simulate infinite-dimensional spaces using finite-dimensional ones, by building up a "field of view" analogous to how a rendering engine simulates an infinite open world. Another example is that you can define negative-dimensional spaces by taking quotients "virtually". What you lose is concreteness. But I view this in a positive light. It's a fascinating challenge to try to picture these manmade horrors, to gain visual intuition for things which were not constructed visually. Algebraic geometry is a subject pervaded by metaphors. I also believe that higher category theory is the way of the future. What people don't understand is that Jacob Lurie's work is incredibly concrete. In his world, a single topological space and the category Top are made of the same basic material: simplicial sets. Nothing can be more concrete than a simplicial set. They appear in applied math, too, whenever you triangulate a space in order to manipulate it or solve a PDE. This restoration of concreteness explains why people are trying to turn higher category theory into a computable foundation for math. I know this idea from Voevodsky, but of course there is also homotopy type theory (univalence, etc.) which Clora you know a lot better than me. My favorite viewpoint on categories is that they are just monoids which are "spread out" across different locations / entities. Indeed, a category with one object is equivalent to a monoid. A pre-additive category with one object is equivalent to a ring. It's fun to think about small categories, which describe a single thing (e.g. paths on a topological space) rather than a world of things. But I also agree with CMD's take on mathstodon. It is no surprise that those who are drawn towards "virtual" spaces also tend to have "virtual" genders, i.e. genders which rely on simulation through consensus. These ideas by themselves are sterile, intellectually and biologically. The best math work, pure or applied, uses abstraction liberally but only as a tool, to cut away the chaff and reveal the living core. And the core is always a computation, or a picture, or generally speaking some funny interlocking serendipitous coincidence that is NOT explained by the formalistic koans that we whisper as ASMR to help ourselves fall asleep. It really frustrates me that so many "enlightened" people like to present math as smoke and mirrors, shock and awe, but when you ask them where the real WORK is happening, where is the engine that makes the beautiful machine run, they have nothing to say. CMD, I wonder if that's where our viewpoints agree?

@ai @skaly @Ottovonshitpost @AidanTTIerian @clora I think we agree on the viewpoint regarding the people who enjoy this type of Math, but I do sincerely disagree that losing concreteness is necessarily a positive thing.When we solve problems in the real world, they have structures that can be exploited which allow you to do all sorts of cool things. These things aren't always extremely deep, but very often it is an incredibly simple fact about the problem that allows you to get the problem solved quickly and to the satisfaction of everyone involved. The best example is the development of the Convolutional Neural Network - exploiting the fact that "there is a cat in the image" is invariant to small shifts allowed us to cut the number of parameters in our networks down a lot, so we could actually solve the problem at that time.I think Mathematicians in general don't really appreciate how a lot of problems crumble to really simple tools that only work in a few scenarios. If you're working to solve your problem, then you should focus on *your* problem - not a bajillion others all at once. That said, once you *have* your problem solved, then abstracting the technique out is good, but that should really be an afterthought, rather than the purpose. For lots of Mathematicians, "abstracting the technique out" is really the purpose, and I think this is a little silly.

I would say that Medical Imaging (inverse radon transform, etc.) has a lot of these sorts of problems - there's a lot of tricks that work for certain types of sensors that just absolutely fail when generalized.Given the nature of the architecture of neural networks that do some sort of Natural Language Processing, I *suspect* there's something similar going on there (otherwise they'd have just thrown a pile of dense layers at it), but I don't know the details well enough. The fact that humans can only make a set number of sounds with their mouths is *really* powerful, but I don't know how often people actually exploit that.Last, my understanding is that people who study PDE have piles and piles of examples of this. We weren't talking about Sulphate, we were talking about the Hydrogen atom's symmetries.Now, with the Sulphate ion: that has the shape of a tetrahedron, and it's symmetric under any permutation of the oxygen atoms...so it's a subgroup of what we call "S_4" (the Symmetric group of degree 4, which has order 24). However, we cannot reflect the Sulphate ion in real life...so we're stuck with only the rotations. We can count out the number of rotations by hand and come up with at least 8 by rotating around each face of the tetrahedron twice...and we can just leave it alone, so we get a 9th. The group has order at least 9...and because the subgroup order must divide 24, this means that the group has order at least 12. We also threw out at least one element, so it can't have order 24... so we know that the group's order is exactly 12. There's only one subgroup of S_4 with these properties: the group of symmetries of the Sulphate ion is A_4.

The quantum stuff is interesting but it reminds me of philosophy sometimes since some of it can't be proven or isn't proven yet.I enjoy seeing how others look at stuff and now I'm going to have to look into it more I guess.The way I learned was through chemistry like you guessed and the orbital shape a lone hydrogen has is spherical. When they start filling up slots in the electron shell by bonding then we start assigning them with an up spin or down spin according to the "Pauli exclusion principle" and then they can start taking shapes like "dumbbells" and other shapes.What is this area of study where you are learning about this?

The symmetries of a molecule help you determine its vibrational modes, and the character table is part of that calculation. The first half of the article is just math but the second half is an example for H2O. If you search "chemically important point groups" you also get a window into how chemists talk about symmetry groups.

They're supposed to make mistakes, and they're supposed to become better at the things they're learning. That's nominally the point of university.This is actually one of the big reasons I gave up on pursuing academia, and it's a big part of the reason that I'm not exactly interested in pursuing a Ph.D. anymore, even if I'm more than capable of getting one.1433463704027-4.png

A lot of professors are terribly short-sighted. They want to flaunt the prestige of their field today by "only working with the best and brightest", by holding people to impossibly high standards, by refusing to engage with those who aren't already experts. They're shooting themselves in the field because every field withers unless it receives an inflow of new talent. I've met "great professors" who are obviously destroying their field because of their cult of personality and how they act, and they don't seem to give a flying fuck. It's obviously true that professors make a larger impact by teaching undergrads than grad students, because the undergrads are malleable while a grad student is already pretty independent and specialized onto a track, no matter what you personally teach them. Not to say that a prof can't have an important impact on a grad student. But a lot of profs don't understand this obvious point for whatever reason (short-sightedness). Based on what you've written elsewhere, you are obviously more than capable of getting a Ph.D. The academia environment is shitty for sure and I 100% sympathize.
