This project really exemplifies how Mastodon has failed to achieve the one thing it wanted to accomplish: https://github.com/eigenmagic/fediblockholeA tool for keeping a Mastodon instance blocklist synchronised with remote lists. The broad design goal for FediBlockHole is to support pulling in a list of blocklists from a set of trusted sources, merge them into a combined blocklist, and then push that merged list to a set of managed instances.I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: WHITELIST FEDERATION. MASTODON WANTS WHITELIST FEDERATION. WHITELIST FEDERATION.All of this work is being done to create and synchronize block lists… but they want to block more than 50% of the network! The solution is to build tooling around WHITELIST FEDERATION! Make your instance crawl for new servers, notify the admin, and have them manually review each new instance. If the right solution hit them in the face they wouldn’t recognize it!

Opt IN is generally better than opt OUT. That said, most "open" technology is created by and for people that have spent far too much time in corporate software development ideologies that are driven by opt out flows (and difficult ones at that) because it's easier to trap "customers" that way.

@alex But then they don't get the power kick from blocking. Consider that we are talking Mastodon Jannies here. It's the only means of power they have left as they are the lowest of lowest of failed males in the hierarchy

@alex Instance blocking should be a difficult, cumbersome process, and being able to share blocklists should never even be possible, being the pure cancer that it is, resulting in lots of instances being blocked by lots of other instances for completely unknown "crimes".Everyone federating with everyone should be the default.

@ChristiJunior @alex DisagreeOne Single 'together' list is a bad ideaWe are incompatibleWe shouldn't be FORCED to integrateWe shouldn't be expected to lower our standards to other groupsWe should have the choice to create our own networksown listsown associations

@ChristiJunior @alex I honestly don't care if they have their little echo chambers.

@alex The only reason they don't use whitelists is because they want "open federation" am I right? If they use whitelists they can federate with the approved instances, which would be helpful when trying to build a "safe space". I'm surprised they didn't know this existed (not much emphasis) and about how they were able to come up with something like this so fast.

@alex Is there as much development in open source as there is politics?
