"Cistercian Numbers" are incredibly coolIt's a rare numeric system designed by 13th century monksEach number is a based on a single vertical stick, with patterns you draw in all four quadrants off it -- top right, top left, bottom right, bottom leftA single glyph can represent a number from 1 to 9,999It's in my recent weekly "Linkfest" newsletter, here: https://buttondown.email/clivethompson/archive/linkfest-3-cisterian-numbers-robots-that-hug-and/Want to subscribe? @clive In college I created a similar-looking runic alphabet to take notes in class. It soon got sophisticated as I not only had symbols for a-z and 0-9, but I created symbols for common word endings like -ing and other single symbols for letter combos like “st” and “br” etc. I supose it was a kind of shorthand but man did it work. I could take notes in class and keep right up with the teacher. Filled notebooks with this stuff. Other students would give me “wtf” looks when they saw my notes lol!

@clive I deeply regret not keeping up with mine...I used to be really good and could even use it for taking down French! I mostly used it in lectures and was secretary at a university sit-in as I could also touchtype really fast and accurately (well before computers!).

@clive That is up with the COOLEST darn things I’ve ever seen!! Code nerd from waaaay back. I’ve been writing in QuikScript (a derivative of George Bernard Shaw’s Shavian) for 40 years, and I’m stoked to *finally* have a number system to add to that. Incredible!I agree with the commenter who suggested a weighted version for people with dyslexia. It’s a great idea, and won’t be hard to do.

@clive @isaaccp I’ve heard Korean is a modern logical writing as well. It’s interesting how easy writing letters and numbers could have been if we were able to invent new ones. I wonder how negative numbers would be shown. I would have preferred the four locations in an (anti)clockwise way. Also, grouping by four digits is not helping SI prefixes.

@hansup Good question! Possibly not. In the medieval period, most Christian thinkers were still quite unsettled by zero -- and its related mathematical concept, infinity -- since the concepts of nothingness and infinity seemed to impinge, dangerously, on God's terrainIt's why medieval math boomed in Islamic and indian areas, but not in christian onesSo they may have been avoiding zeroNice short essay on it https://cambriamathtutors.com/zero-christianity/@cgseife's book "Zero" is a *fab* exploration of this

@clive I love this. 👍I in advertently recreated many of these glyph designs (for a story) in nearly/exactly the same arrangements! Don't think I've seen these before but the system I used in the story was partially based on Runes and "Oghams"(?) as well as sundial shadows and clock hands. Thanks.

@clive They were very interesting to me, missus was diagnosed with dyslexia back in the day and always loved roman numerals so I was fascinated by the idea and ended up making what I called courtney's numerals.

@clive that would make division and subtraction a nightmare. Beautiful, however.

@economics Yeah, preciselyMy *suspicion* -- which I am pulling out of my ass, I should probably do some research before I pop off, but it's late and night and I'm lazy -- is that this numbering system was better suited to listing numbers that aren't being deployed mathematically (i.e. giving a date or a year), and less useful for doing mathBut maybe they did awesome math with it too?

@clive I believe the Basque numbering system resembles it but I am working from memory. They are one of the world’s most unusual group. They are genetic and linguistic isolates and I believe Dominic was a Basque.

@clive Started it in 2014, did 2 full and about 3/4's of 1 of 3 giant epic EPIC drafts. The draft for the first part is on my quangobaud wordpress as "No Man's Land". The second part is also still a draft but not posted. In that 2nd part, pilots need a common Universal language and those Cistercian glyphs are 99% the same as the ones I came-up with. The whole "epic" is set "500 years" in the future (but 100 years after a plague from domestic & citysize biotech "hopped" to the human "pop" and reduced their numbers from 10 billion to one billion). The largest surviving contingent were "caucasian" but there was plague-paranoia genocide of other "races" also involved. Actually, there are large surviving Asiatic, Chinese & Bharat-Indian pops, also. The eurocentric nations have "the patriarchy run by women" and the whole world has been invaded by "invisible alien social workers!". Communication between survivors, oppressors and "invaders" is a main theme but I always stress that there is more to communication than just written words. The 2nd part is kinda a version of Harry Harrison's "the Missing Battleship"/Stainless Steel Rat; like Harrison, I lampoon James Bond and spies in it. The 3rd part's draft got annoying so I slowed down when I was 3/4s through. That one is solidly about the mediocrity of fascists and their enablers.

@clive Starting with index, count to four on left hand. For five, lower all four digits and just use thumb. Then thumb + index = 6 and all five digits up is 9. Then use right hand to count 1 index as 10, etc. so once all 10 digits are up it’s 99. She claimed to use toes to get to 9,999 but I was never able to successfully do that. 😂

@clive LOL. Check out the way music is notated in original Gregorian chant, which Cistercians & Carthusians (and other monastic orders) still use.

@clive Je ne connaissais pas, mais je ne suis pas certain que cette écriture soit facile à apprendre. J'ajoute que faire des calculs avec ces chiffres doit être au moins aussi complexe qu'avec les chiffres romains, voire plus encore.
