@obihahn 37 years ago today I was setting trusses on the third floor of an apartment complex in Orlando and saw the Challenger explode. It was surreal. Being from NH as was Christa McAuliffe, it was a little extra sad. We took the rest of the day off and sat in a bar eating oysters and drinking pitchers :(

@hogihung @TechyDog At the time I was a jr. In HS, and we had a timeshare in FL so this launch lined up with our week, but rather than drive there to watch, we just decided to watch from the beach. We saw the âpoorâ and were like, what happened? That doesnât look right. So we ran into the condo and watched CNN the rest of the day monitoring the situation.

@hogihung @TechyDog I have always loved the space program, and have actually been that the cape for several launches when I was a kid in the 80âs and again once they resumed the shuttle project in the 90âs.

@obihahn I was too young to have any memories of this first hand, but my Dad was doing work for someone and saw the contrail and the explosion. He looked down at the guy's television through the window and saw it explode on TV due to the transmission delay.

@obihahn My brother and I were at home, school had a two hour delay, but the parents kept us home (and then went to work). I was in my room on my Atari 800 XL and my brother hollered back "The shuttle blew up". I said, "no that's just what it looks like when it launches." He said, "No, it really blew up." I had to go out and correct him... and saw the explosions. For the first of several hundred times that day.

@obihahn If students watched this happen while in school, they would be sent home, school would be closed for a few days and then couselors would be brought in to help the student s deal with their grief.I was probably working when this happened and remember the joke. What color were Christa McAuliffe's eyes? Blew, one blew this way and the other blew that way.

@obihahn I had just gotten back to my apartment after a graveyard shift in Silicon valley. HAd rushed home to watch the launch, and just caught "3, 2, 1..." as I sat down. It was rather disorienting when the explosion happened. I was thinking: "That's just the separation charge, and those two diverging trails are the auxiliary tanks..." Then it all sank in. Hats off to those who dare to explore space.
