@entreprecariat 2023 is when annoyance about .pages finally surpasses annoyance about .docx. It is one thing to assume everyone can handle your MS Word file, but to assume everyone can deal with Pages is just off the hook. 😂

@entreprecariat pffffrrrt! text pdf: rarely can read it on e-reader because of silly formatting, can't copy text from it without getting silly spaces and did i mention silly formatting, graphic pdf: can't open it properly if you don't have the fonts installed ... - do i need to go on?! ^^

@entreprecariatYeah! DOS compilers used .CPPI also saw .cxx, but I'm not sure where it came from. Meanwhile, Classic Macs and UNIXes were like: "there's technically no such thing as an extension, the filename can be anything you want it to be, including spaces and multiple periods, just no : or /"

@entreprecariat hahaha I looked at the replies and see that nobody else has mentioned the specific suffering of “file formats” that require you to have multiple files with the same name but different extensions. This is extremely esoteric, but AFNI BRIK/HEAD files come to mind (so you need to have foo.BRIK and foo.HEAD to read the data).

@entreprecariat also, the “resource forks” for old Mac files that still sometimes appear as an additional file with the same name, but starting with “._”. Although it was fun that you could easily change the graphics of an existing app just by editing it with ResEdit. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource_fork

@entreprecariat +1 for .pages. Maybe not the right way to describe it but feels like skeuomorphic file extension. Like, I can't think of any other extensions which try to describe it's real world equivalent (e.g. audio files aren't .music)
