Contrary to what most people probably expect, recording desktop/system audio on #Linux (in my case, Kubuntu) is WAY easier out of the box than on an M1 Mac (macOS). I'm really surprised, but there it is.(Context: I record from a variety of digital and analog sources to a master file in Audacity, so I can apply manual crossfades, leveling, etc, before recording to tape -- and to be able to serve you some digital mixtapes).

@killyourfm Honestly, I haven't had audio problems on Linux for so long, that the audio jokes should just be put to death.

@ainmosni To be fair, I always struggled with JACK, but that's not remotely a use-case for the average user. Yea, I totally agree. You EXPECT basic to intermediate audio stuff to be intuitive and mindless on MacOS. But it's kinda not. At least on KDE, the audio interface is sublime.

@killyourfm Yeah, KDE's audio's UI is great, GNOME finally is at the same level now, but every time I tried KDE (which seems to be finally sticking now) I was jealous of the audio and BT interfaces. Also, pipewire seems to be going from strength to strength.

@ainmosni Ah, I need to get up to speed with Pipewire since I'm starting to spend way more time with Linux again.

@killyourfm Audio on macOS is one of things my earlier mini-rant today was about. It used to be awesome. Now? Bloody hassle.

@killyourfm It's the default in a few distros now, Fedora has had it default for 2 or 3 releases, the latest Ubuntu as well I think, but I'm not an Ubuntu person so don't trust me on that.I remember trying it out on Arch relatively early on, and it just working perfectly, and remember how long it took before pulseaudio got usable.Never been a JACK user myself, but IIRC pipewire is replacing that too.

@killyourfm My issues have been related to the changing security models, so Intel Macs would have the same issues with the latest versions of macOS. Installing things like Audio Hijack is way harder than it should be. And then you also need to allow apps to actually do their jobs - like access directories. It is madness. The other day I could suddenly only download to OneDrive on my work machine because the browser was suddenly no longer allowed to access ~Downloads/ or ~Desktop/ >.<

@killyourfm I’ve used Reaper to record from a multiport DAC onto my Kubuntu laptop. Worked really well.

@killyourfm I started using Linux after pipewire became a thing so I've never understood Linux audio complaints. Pipewire makes Linux audio so powerful but simple to manager.

@trezzer @killyourfm This growing sandboxing headache was what got me to switch to Windows/WSL after many years of loyal macOS usage. I installed Linux as dual-boot for some dev work. Surprisingly, I found that Linux covered all my needs, despite them being pretty varied.

@geewiz @killyourfm My Mac Mini is a Plex server now and I am writing this from Linux. Same reason. I do get minor issues in Linux, too, but overall a far smaller headache to get things done. I haven't really tried video or audio editing, though. Just regular desktop stuff. We all know how good Audacity is, so I'm sure I'd be good there, too. Perhaps making music will prove more challenging.

@trezzer @geewiz Making music on Linux is the last, very tall hurdle for me. I wasn't ready to fight through the headache a couple years ago, but I'm willing to bet it has vastly improved, especially where Pipewire is the default.

@quasigod WOW, I never thought *I* would be that "well back in my day" guy... Especially since I didn't start using Linux until 2018. But it was HELL in 2018. Ask musicians how they feel about JACK 😂

@geewiz @trezzer The sobering honest truth is that Logic Pro's "Drummer" functionality is just way too brilliant for me to ditch. Although, I'm strongly considering getting something called AeroDrums to have some semblance of a real, human-driven kit for music production.

@killyourfm No, I doubt anything sound-heavy will run under wine. I'm still getting it for Win/Mac, though. It seems to be state of the art - AND it is affordable.

@trezzer well since I’m still using macOS for music production I’m going to seriously look into it. Appears to do some things even better than Logic Pro’s drummer AI

@killyourfm I would really love to produce music on Linux, but I have already invested a lot in Mac plugins from NI, and iZotope for instance. I guess I will be buying a Mac M2 this year.
