It doesn't take much to convince me that religious people will have lower divorce rates and happier marriages. However this article seems to be making the claim that marrying young is the secret, and I think it's far more likely that marrying young and staying together are both just traits of religious people. So the real secret is faith.

@cjd @Shadowman311 Sample size of one, but for my wife and I faith wasn’t a thing for the first 20 years of our marriage.Christ let us take our time coming around to him. Marrying in our (very) early 20’s has made it much easier to stay together.

The funniest thing is that I can see this and I'm a totally non-religious person. I would call myself agnostic because atheists are fucking annoying. But I'm not stupid enough to act like religion doesn't confer memetic survival traits on those who adopt it.

Congratulations on a happy life! My wife and I have been together just about 5 years and we married late. We're doing well together BUT she's not from the US and I'm expatriated so that helps a lot. I still get the feeling we were mislead about what should be our priorities.

@cjd @Shadowman311 Congrats! May God grant you many happy and fruitful years together. When my wife and I announced our engagement the most common reply we got was “Why, you’re still so young!” I remember one of my fellow NCO’s asking me why I was getting married, and he was genuinely surprised when I said because I loved her. There is definitely an agenda to keep young people from marrying and starting traditional families, just as there is against Christ and his church. They’re both antisemetic lol.

@Consoomer88 @cjd @Shadowman311 I wonder if the secret is less "faith" in the broad sense and more "faith" in the sense that specific virtues make certain outcomes more likely and faith cultivates these.Marriage lasting more often? Man and wife who both take oath seriously will outlive the strip club crowd and the polyculew crowd.

I really liked the read. There's many other books.Mandatory for LTR in 2023+ age

@Shadowman311 @cjd Exactly. The common mistake of thinking there is causality, when there's only correlation. Age of marriage and divorce rates are correlated, but not causal. The correlation only points to an underlying connection, in this case faith as a causal source.Very common mistake in statistics. It tells you that whoever put together those studies doesn't understand statistics.

I suspect what's driving this is in fact people who marry young actually have a clear idea about the path their life should take, and so they just follow that path. Be it dictated by faith or otherwise, they know what they want to do. People who wait have less clarity.

@cjd @Consoomer88 @Shadowman311 I am trying to understand the question, a girl like your daughter? age? your sister? age?In a perfect way, so to say, the girl learns from the parents and knows intuitively how to choose as she has had the example of what is a 'good' man/relationship in the family. The "MRP" material is surely great knowledge for all and covers both sexes, but to be honest, for my girls, I leave it mostly to my wife (and me when she there's an opening).

@Nelenese It's because it makes every physical interaction prior to marriage meaningful since it's not something that just happens every day, it's similar to how waiting before marriage for sexual intercourse also helps improve marriages

@Shadowman311 @Nelenese I agree and I think there's something about willpower and commitment there too. If two people had the willpower and commitment to not cohabitate and not have sex before marriage then naturally you would see the application of willpower and commitment after marriage. Stronger people do more difficult things, and having a lasting and successful marriage can be difficult.

@Shadowman311 @Nelenese Additionally, living together without being married has the unspoken implication that you would leave given the chance for someone better. Relationships where everyone is holding back are less durable.

Nice!Another big looming storm cloud ahead is school. In the first couple of years it's all about reading and that's relatively "easy", but after that - what kind of school actually teaches things which will help a person succeed?I'm largely of the opinion that most schools don't teach a whole lot beyond the critical importance of school. So basically it's just memetics, self-replicating by indoctrination.

@cjd @mukona @Consoomer88 @Shadowman311 <I have a 4yo daughter and have thought about this a fair amount.Best thing you can do is to be a good male role model. Something I heard years ago: "Woman either want men like their father, or nothing like their father".The latter because of bad fatherhood. So if you're a good father with good values, chances are she'll want someone like you.

@cjd @Shadowman311 There is truth in what you're saying. Having goals and drive in life are important. One of the most important things in a marriage is having common values and common vision for what that marriage will look like. Having a shared belief system that guides worldview, life direction, and how to handle conflict is extremely beneficial to that, regardless of the age. Getting married young by itself seems unlikely to strengthen a marriage. Especially today, people are more immature at a young age, so you would think being married young by itself would be more likely to cause divorce due to that immaturity. As a religious person, I can guarantee you that we have the same marriage issues as everyone else. With Faith comes a respect for the marriage institution as established by God, so there is a much greater drive to find solutions to marriage conflicts and keep that sacred institution alive between the husband and wife, when sometimes it would be easier to simply walk away and get divorced.

@cjd @TheWanax It's also in part due to pair bonding, women lose the ability to pair bond after they engage in sexual intercourse more than 3 times, with men its after about 10 times. People who marry young either had very few sexual partners prior to their spouses or had none at all since they waited until marriage (another faith based value) thus allowing their marriage to be made stronger by pair bonding in the marital bed.

@cjd @feld @lain @Consoomer88 @Shadowman311 @Moon this is a deep thread I forgot to answer.I think there should be good curriculum when you make it there. Initially, and mostly all the way, we did use K12 remote due to our lifestyle, and to be honest, it turned out great. At the of the day, it's that you are in family and have first take on discussions with the kids that matters the most.We use various sites, such as IXL, to speed up learning. The worst is Internet/cheating/adult suff...
