@lolennui holy shit this is a bad idea. This needs regulation. Stuff created by robots needs to be labelled.

@lolennui Aaand, I just finally removed Buzzfeed from Feedly. Even the occasional halfway serious news piece is no longer worth it.

@john @lolennui I don't know if you're familiar with how large part of the English Wikipedia was originally written by bots.I'm not kidding.

@timjan @lolennui in what way? I’m aware of Wikipedia bots, but the ones I’m familiar with are obviously not the sort of thing I’m talking about.

@john @lolennui there's an article about every single named place in the United States. Most of them were started by a bot: I don't know what proportion of them has ever been updated by a human.Last I really cared, less than half of them had had a human edit. (That was many years ago, though).

@john @timjan @lolennui the core difference is also that wikipedia is a collaborative process, nobody's surplus value is being extracted and therefore bots don't make someone more money by making someone else way less, instead less work is needed to do work that benefits all. that's not what happens with machine learning writing articles.

@Ayanna @lolennui I know, it's really interesting! And honestly it'd make for a good enough #Buzzfeed article. Not sure how much we care about the journalistic integrity of a #Buzzfeed article.*golden showers story has entered the chat*

@john @timjan @lolennui bot-written stubs were intendend as "seeds" to involve people in expanding them. For the 8,000 Italian municipalities, on the Italian wikipedia, it worked great to attract new human editors. An example of bot-written stub is the very first version of https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brembatehttps://it.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Brembate&diff=189094&oldid=0&variant=itbots were java or python routines fed by database tables compiling raw boilerplates, without any "intelligence" behind it.
