I picked @ivory as my MBW pick of the week this week. My reason: I have tried a lot of mediocre Mastodon clients and I think the demand out there for Ivory is because a lot of people want something better. I don't want other Mastodon clients to die. I want them to up their game. This influx of users and developer attention is a moment of opportunity for developers. Back in 2010-ish there were a zillion Twitter clients, most of them mediocre. A few rose above. That's what it's going to take.

@jsnell @ivory One of my biggest worries right now is that this is going to end up being another "app.net" experience. With what Twitter has become, I really don't want to see us have to go through that "alternative platform trauma" again. I paid for NetBot and used it, and I intend to pay for and use Ivory, but I'm doing so cautiously. What do you think is possibly different this time around? Is it simply that we are at a different inflection point?cc: @ihnatko @leolaporte

@skip_rynearson @jsnell @ivory @ihnatko @leolaporte I think Mastodon being based on open standard protocols makes a difference here too. There will always be a market for that, and I think enough people have come to like it thanks to Musk. I for one am never going back to corporate controlled social media monoliths.

@skip_rynearson This is not netbot or app.net. Our company is completely invested in Mastodon and have been ever since we decided to move here a few months ago. If we don't succeed here, there will most likely be no more Tapbots. πŸ™‚

@jsnell @ivory It's great for Mastodon that Tapbots have managed to get out Ivory so quickly. I'm sure it will do well.My personal favourite Mastodon client at the moment is @MonaApp - although that's technically still only available in "early access" form.

@gcluley @jsnell @ivory @MonaApp Agree Graham. @MonaApp is brilliant. @ivory is very clean, but Mona sticks with me better

@desparoz @gcluley @MonaApp One of the things we learned early on in Twitter client land was that a diversity of clients fits a diversity of user preferences. For example, when I mentioned I used Twitterrific people assumed I had never heard of Tweetbot! They couldn't conceive of someone preferring something different. I want multiple Mastodon clients to flourish and be good and make people happy.

@jsnell just partially agree. There are many average clients out there. None is really outstanding now. If you prefer #Ivory over #IceCubeApp or others is because of personal preferences or bias.

@mruizalba I hate to break it to you but there's no such thing as the objectively best app. It's all about personal preference.I chose to recognize a new app that I think really elevates the game. I specifically chose NOT to denigrate apps that I looked at and found wanting.Yep, that's personal preference talking again. The only thing I can do is be honest about what I like and why. You don't have to agree.
