Trying to get my head around and understand why 2 of my friends were shot and killed at age 17 is hard asf .This is why as a country we need to have an honest conversation about gun control. Predominantly, it is black kids like me getting killed and nobody seems to give af?Guys , I joined mastodon to get a serious conversation going . Not sure how I get this amped up? @Jaden2 I am from the UK and agree with you fully, It is not our job as Brits to dictate to the US, how you do things. From what I see is endless senseless killings of innocent people, promises of action, then nothing till the next mass shooting, the repeat. It really looks bad on Americans.

@Jaden2 @zleap From where I am sitting, in Canada, they don't seem to care if it is black kids, white kids, toddlers or old chinese people. Having and selling guns is more important than anything else to these horrible people. I do not know why every American who is not pro murderer doesnt refuse to do anything but stand in the street screaming obscenities until they pass some meaningful gun laws.

@SusanHR @Jaden2 I know our carry on films are from the 60's and are not exactly PC, but there is a scene in Carry on Follow that camel, where Abdul is about to attack the French forign legion, who are enroute to relieve a fort which is going to be attacked by the natives, in order to boost morale (as they have been walking in the desert for days and got lost a few times) one of the officers suggests building sandcastles, this works until there is a disagreement on the winner. This causes a huge fight among them selves.Meanwhile Abdul (who is watching) decides not to bother attacking them and declares "the actions of the WHITE infidel, is like the actions of the cleanser, clean round the bend" and orders the attack on the fort to commence.Film was made in 1967, I still feel sometimes that comment seems rather apt,

@Jaden2 My heart hurts with every shooting. I have no answers. I vote for gun control and legislators over rule my vote or the Courts step in and say it is unconstitutional. Some say it should be addressed using a public health model. That approach seems promising. @TammyGentzel @Jaden2 Thing is, how is an armed mob storming the capital building any different to a single armed person entering a school and starting to shoot at children. Congress is acting robustly on those who stormed the building and those behind that. The acts are the same they are ARMED because of successive government failure to implement some form gun controls equally there is a failure to help those with Mental health issues, failure to deal with work / school bullying and a host of other reasons.

@awesomeknight @Jaden2 I agree with that also agree with @Jaden2 about racism. There was a post on here the other day about the lack of black scientists getting either funding or papers published. So long as there is inquality this will carry on being a problem. #How much talent is being lost when we reject science on the basis of race,? which has no impact on the paper being written, the content or the quality, which is where the focus should be. So the issue extends to more aspects of life in the US, There is no desire at the top to make it stop but at the same time too many people who don't want it to stop.

@zleap @Jaden2 I’m not sure Congress is holding the armed mob responsible…the DOJ is. Congress, in my opinion, has done squat to keep it from happening again. But I agree on the gun control. We have guns. We used to hunt. I’m from a long line of military. I don’t personally know anyone who opposes permits, mandatory training, red flag laws, and background checks. And I don’t understand those who do oppose such simple safety measures.

@SusanHR @Jaden2 @zleap This 🇨🇦 sees things a bit differently. Indigenous and POC are disportially represented in morgues and prison in Canada as well. And it's well documented in each and every province. Racism is alive and thriving. Policing in Canada at all levels is there to protect the corporate and white privilege.

@SusanHR @Jaden2 @zleap Statistically we may be better off, but morally, no. .Just listen to any conservative politician and their overwhelming support for all things American including the whole gun thing, private education and private for profit health care, and open immigration only for the white and monied. I take no comfort from knowing that one third of Canadians support them.

@SusanHR @babcia54 @Jaden2 Conversations start somewhere, firstly finding people who are on the same page, fedi at present seems to be a safer place for this, get enough people here and we can make changes.Even if we can't change gun laws, perhaps we can make a difference to education outcomes for minority groups, and eventually the number of minority groups who can get papers published. The internet is one of the greatest collections of knowledge ever created, it is also the greatest collection of misinformation, once people can differntiate.

@babcia54 @SusanHR @Jaden2 I think it is down to fear, perhaps they feel they stand to lose a lot if anything other than white people are in charge, as people will be judged by the content of their character not by the colour of their skin. As the majority of politicians are white, those who are corrupt, failed to act, failed to listen and failed to respect others are doomed.
