Why is corn syrup subsidized in the US? The reasoning I've read is so we're not so dependent on other countries, in case there's a food shortage, and it's a versatile food. But what's the consequence of this? It's getting used too often because it's cheap to produce: https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2016/07/18/486051480/we-subsidize-crops-we-should-eat-less-of-does-this-fatten-us-upI believe my son has a dairy allergy. It's common in infants and they almost all grow out of it. It would explains a lot of his fussiness and other symptoms. I combo feed so now I have to cut dairy out of my diet, but also have to find a formula for him. That should be easy right, since it's so common? The first thing the pediatrician recommends is soy formula. I shared this article awhile back: https://myorganiccompany.store/blogs/news/is-soy-bad-for-babiesAbsolutely no soy. It's horrible to give to babies and children. How about goat milk formula? It has less allergens and is easier on the stomach. It's big in Europe. I buy a box from a European website that ships to America. Nope, doesn't work. It must be a full dairy allergy and not just from cows protein. I do my research. His allergy isn't bad enough he would need an amino acid based formula. Oh wait, here it is! I need a hydrolyzed formula. THIS should have been my answer, but it just becomes more complicated. All hydrolyzed formulas in the US first ingredient is corn syrup. That sounds gross. I look it up, "is corn syrup bad for babies." The first article is from enfamil saying it's a myth it's bad for babies! I look around more and eventually find an actual article with facts and studies: https://undark.org/2022/09/19/why-is-corn-syrup-in-so-many-american-infant-formulas/So because Americans get lactose and milk protein mixed up, and it's cheaper to produce, my only options are to get hydrolyzed formula with corn syrup? Even when it risks my son's health? That's when I came on here to get European mother's insight. You guys have a wonderful privilege that any of your formulas on the shelves have been regulated by the EU, and they're strict when it comes to babies. Did you know only one baby formula made in America would pass EU regulations? And it was only made in 2018 from some mothers who were done with the gross formula here. Bobbi formula. But damn, they don't have a hydrolyzed version yet. I take in a shot in the dark and ask my BIL's fiance who's from Germany if she had any insight on this. Miraculously, she does! She went through the exact same thing and I, miraculously, was able to find a European formula that's hydrolyzed with lactose as the base. No corn syrup and clean ingredients. That's the thing though, I'm lucky. I can afford it. I have European family and friends to ask. I know how to dig around the Internet. What about mother's who can't? Who don't have the time to look into all of this? Their baby has a dairy allergy and they just pick what's on the shelves - hydrolyzed formula with corn syrup. There's no outrage because the companies lie and say it's safe for babies. Because it's cheap to produce. Because it's subsidized. An endless cycle that's helping cause our health problems like the obesity epidemic in America. And now it's too political to lay off subsidizing corn. That hurts votes, which hurts money. And now we're hurting our children from infancy with this.

@LisbonMuse Corn syrup is subsidized in the U.S. because agribusiness runs the food industry. Why else are we using ethanol to run our vehicles? It lowers the mpg of gasoline, messes up small engines, but the subsidies enrich Arthur Daniel Midlands, the hedge funds, etc. That is really awful about what to feed your baby. All these allergies now which were virtually unknown when I was a kid. No peanut allergies, no dairy allergies, no egg allergies, but then we weren't given 69 vaccines before we started school. A survey was done nationwide of school nurses in which they said the children they are seeing are the unhealthiest children ever.

@susansiens I didn't know that ethanol! It's a really tough time to be a parent (but when hasn't I guess). Can't trust the government at all because it's all just run for money by lobbyist to sell things. Oh yeah the vaccine one is fun. I'm either pumping my kid full of toxins or killing him with deadly diseases. Then when he enters school all that shitty progressive stuff will be pushed on him. Crappy school foods. I'm just feeling so stuck on what to do to protect him from it as best I can!

@LisbonMuse There is a probiotic called qiara that may reduce some of the symptomsYou can get camels milk. It's very expensive and hard to find but for someone in my family it didn't trigger their babys dairy allergy (couldn't have goat or sheep or cow milks)You'll likely need to start creating your own formula, if you can find a back alley farmer you may also want to try unpasteurized unhomogenoised milk straight from the cow. It contains a bunch of enzymes that are destroyed in the pasteurization process that aid in the digestion of milkOtherwise you're probably fucked. If possible pump and transition your kid to entirely breast milk until they can start on solids.Increases your egg intake. Mix chicken liver with ground beef. Check if fish triggers an allergic reaction (try a tuna a mayo sandwich).

@LisbonMuse this is just awful. I had no idea US baby formula uses corn syrup. And the lies too, I am sadly not surprised by.

@IndustryPlant Wow thank you so much for all this great info and the suggestions. I'll definitely look into it all and try what I can. My friend sent me a homemade formula recipe she made her daughter that worked great, but it had goat milk so maybe if I tried it with camel. But the formula I found has been working really well so far. It's from Germany and has all clean ingredients and I'm already noticing a difference. Unfortunately I'm exclusively pumping (long story on latch issues) and am just not producing enough for all his meals, a majority is breastmilk though. But it's taking a toll to be hooked up to a pump all day long so that's why it's really important for me to find a formula I can eventually switch him over to fully.Thank you again for all of this insight!

@TheWitchBitch I know! I remember my BIL's fiance complaining about it before I had a kid, and I just always thought there had to be something out there that didn't. But nope, she was right. It's really gross. I agree, I'm not surprised, just disappointed they put profits over people.

@susansiens @LisbonMuse 100%. vaccines = genetic modification of the population = food and environmental allergies, autism etc..I'll recommend Mrs Eustace Mullins seminal work "Murder by Injection" published in 1988..https://www.dailymessenger.is/pdf/Murder%20by%20Injection.%20Eustace%20Mullins.pdfas auxiliary reading, don't worry, it's interesting.

@LisbonMuse Continue to pump. It real is worth it for bubIt's very possible that it may take a while and that when bub is older they'll be able to latch. Depending on your issues you might have luck with nipple shield, especially if you have inverted nipples. If you do this long enough you'll be able to remove the shields. Pumping takes much longer and it's much more disruptive to sleep compared to boob, so it's worth periodically trying again and again. This isn't much help, but don't lose hope

@LisbonMuse The important thing is to get them in the right sizehttps://www.medela.com.au/breastfeeding/products/breast-care/contact-nipple-shieldIf your still within the healthcare system see if you can try some of the disposable ones they have, you should be able to find your sizeThe long length makes it's easier for dumb babies to latch

@IndustryPlant @LisbonMuse I remember my nipple shield days when my daughter was a newborn. It was a nightmare because she'd always knock them off with her reflexive flailing newborn hands but it was worth it in the end because she breastfeeds amazing now

@TheVeryLutheranHousewife @IndustryPlant @LisbonMuse Ditto on needing training wheels for my boobs. Don't need them any more though.
