Folks are treating the recent tech layoffs as something spontaneous. They were not. The current layoffs were orchestrated by a hedge fund (TCI Fund). This hedge fund demanded that the big tech companies lay people off because they were being paid too much. Let that one sink in: a hedge fund manager saying that you're being paid too much.Note that TCI is demanding that Google lay off more people.

A lot of evil in the world could be prevented by outlawing hedge funds.

@ariadne @oneiros @fuzzychef The funny thing about covering technology for a living is that after a while 6 billion doesn't even sound like that much. And, for Google I think that makes them like 22nd or so in the list of top stockholders. That said, I'm pressed to think of another good reason for these cuts except an irrational fear of recession.

Why would banning the hedge fund solve anything? Some other capitol investment system would take its place. If you don't like what big tech does, stop supporting them. Piracy > Netflix đ´ââ ď¸ đŚ Pay for the underdogs with integrity like Louder with Crowder, No Agenda and Corbett Report!

@ariadne @fuzzychef And, it's not like Google is hurting for money or needs to pay attention to even the biggest hedge funds. I'm really ticked at what Google, in particular, is doing and I'll be ranting about it in print soon.

@feld That there is only going to be a recession because they said so, and they need to spite the proles who got uppity in a tight labor market. If we hadnât been greedy and asked for living wages, they wouldnât have to punish us.Wait, thatâs not fear. đ¤@fuzzychef @sjvn @oneiros @ariadne

this is nonsense. even with $300k you're far from rich. It's barely "i don't worry about my rent, groceries, bills, and I don't care what the flight costs" money.

@feld @dsfgs @sjvn @ariadne @jollyrogue If youâre at the point where the standard first-world luxuries are easily affordable, I think youâre starting to get to a point where you can call yourself rich.Yeah, there are guys that make 10x, 100x, even 1000x what you do, but being in roughly the top 1-2% of one of the richest countries on the planet certainly isnât âfar from richâ IMO.

And now I am focusing on building my website/blog to ensure that it can help me stand out from the crowd if I end up facing the undesirable situation. Also trying to upskill as much as I can.Are you taking any particular steps?

@Mayank @fuzzychef Updated resume, plus taking advantage of a severance subscription to a resume editing/consulting/legwork service (hey, I'll take any help I can get, force multipliers are good, actually). Heavy networking (which is how I'm getting hold of some of that information). Playing with a few things (Grafana is next). Going to start asking some previous employers if they're hiring. I should do some formal studying, too.

@rodgerdIts not a 'wage', per se. See "median wage of $300,000".Its a payoff for aiding and abetting a criminal totalitarian regime that literally helps extremists (we are being kind here), suppresses dissidents, and engages in and profits from censorship, advertising, hypnotic suggestion techniques, and #massSurveillance. All while signalling "don't be evil".#googleIsNotWhatItSeems@fuzzychef

@dsfgs@activism.openworlds.info Its a payoff for aiding and abetting a criminal...It's getting hard not so see any substantially large income as simply*hush money* for ongoing crimes. With few exceptions many large industries are straight up rackets. Sometimes they are even rackets straight up built on other rackets.War,Tech,Finance,"Health",Education,Media,Religion...Show me a single sector of human life that is not either corrupt down to the roots, or merely struggling to persist despite the rot.I want to believe in a better future, but at the minimum it's going to require some very difficult conversations.@rodgerd@mastodon.social @fuzzychef@m6n.io

@feld @dsfgs @fuzzychef @sjvn @oneiros @ariadne @jollyrogue I would say $300,000 sounds about right, actually. Google is not located in farm country where you (or I) grew up. It is located in the most expensive place to live in America. If you want to live within a reasonable commute from Google, own a house, pay for your kids' child care/college, retire at a decent age, etc, etc, (i.e. what all Americans should get), $300k/yr is not an unreasonable sum. In a good year, My wife and I make around half that living on the other side of the Bay Area, and we can't afford many of the items on that list. The only reason we even have a house is a series of incredibly lucky breaks: my wife's mom died young and left us enough money for a down payment in 1999, then in 2004 Comcast bought my company, fired 75%, forced the rest of us to move to LA at just the right time to double our house's price, and then fired me two years later so we could move back, rent, and buy a cheap house in 2010. No way we could buy one now.

@fuzzychef fun fact: > TCI's stake represents 0.27% of outstanding Alphabet shares(Via https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/15/alphabet-must-cut-headcount-and-trim-costs-activist-investor-tci-says.html)Thatâs still $6bn, but why on earth should less than half a percent give them that amount of leverage? If Alphabet Leadership didnât agree with their argument anyway, then they could tell TCI to buzz off. But they didnât.
