One thing I've never liked about the UK, and have never been able to get used to in my 18 years here is the keyboard layout. Specifically the enter/return key being tall and skinny. SO much of my input ends in a \ because of this stupid layout. Thinking I might remap \ to Return and end this, but I do occasionally use \ while programming though, and would rather not have to hunt around for where I left it when I do need it (I'll never remember).#keyboards #UK #ThingsCountriesGetWrong

@john this seems like it would be manufacturer specific, no? I donโ€™t remember my old British Mac having this issue.

@markscherz I don't think so, country the British layout is a defined standard, and every Mac and Mac keyboard I have bought here (6 or 7 of them, different types and times) has had this tall-Return layout.

@john Literally never would have imagined that the UK would have a different keyboard layout. Wild.

Of course, keyboard layouts of all sorts are colossally stupid, (why is the question mark require a shift?) but this specific thing leads to constant mistakes, not just inefficiency.

@john I think the majority of UK keyboards I've used tend towards the horizontal enter key. Which bothered me as a USian who was used to the more vertical wonky L shape from my childhood.

@john Macs are a weird halfway house. They have a full height return, but still have US quote positioning (and no ยฃ).

@john I guess itโ€™s not very helpful right now, but Apple will let you configure a US layout with short return at order time for most Macs. And of course if you use an external keyboard, you can go for whatever style you want (again Apple sell the US layout ones here in the UK).

@AggroBoy Yeah, but my situation is even stupider than that, I use a third-party keyboard and saddles myself with this nonsense!I think I've had this notion that I should just get used to it. But how long do I wait??

@KFuentesGeorge It took me by surprise when I got my first new computer here. Key mappings have to be different (you need to be able to get to the ยฃ key easily), but the actual keys being different shapes is tricky!

@john ๐Ÿ˜… I feel like 18 years is firmly in โ€œnot that longโ€ territory.Does your preferred manufacturer not sell a US variant? As an aside, this whole conversation has made me realise how filthy my keyboard is, and now Iโ€™m kind-of afraid to touch it.

@john Even worse: the way in which "US" and "UK" keyboards differ on a Mac is *totally* different from how they differ on a PC.

@john It there anything stupider than the key at top-left of a Mac keyboard, just below Escape, that produces a section-marker (ยง), or a plus-or-minus sign (ยฑ) if used with shift? I had, until 30 seconds ago, literally *never* deliberately used that key. what a waste.

@john the plight of European keyboard layouts. I grew up using the Swedish layout, which has the same vertical return key, but also makes it extra difficult to type symbols common in programming and system administration, like gold shift for / or hold alt for [].Now I get to enjoy long delivery times on every computer I buy, as theyโ€™re always specked with a US layout. ๐Ÿ˜„

@mike Not in this regard, the tall vs wide Enter/Return key is consistent: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_and_American_keyboards

@john I was afraid of remapping keys and forgetting until I realized that, especially if it's just a few of them, I could mark the physical keys! I used masking tape, but one could also just use a permanent marker.

@john @AggroBoy I tried to get used to it when I moved back, but gave up and bought a US keyboard - it was the tiny left shift key and the ` key being there that did for me as I was typing ` instead of capital letters all the time.

@john If it is any consolation, the feeling is mutual when going from the eminently sensible shape of the UK return key to the stupidly small vertical target for your little finger that is the US equivalent.I have no problems switching between UK Mac and UK PC keyboards but UK to US of the same is an error-riddled hellscape. (In other words, it's all because it is just what you are trained to use first).

@john tip: various laptop manufacturers have ANSI keyboard models for sale in Europe, but they call it "English Euro", because it is a standard US English keyboard with the addition of the Euro symbol printed on the "5" key.I also got used to ANSI layout while I lived in Thailand, and don't feel like relearning again.
