Ok Linux fags. Serious question.Every time I try Linux I end up going back to windows solely because of the gaming problem. Don't lie to me like all the other times before, is proton really making games run smoothly on Linux and expanding the library on steam or is it a meme?

Some software isn't released for Linux. The simplest solution is to dual-boot.

@CarlShvartz Proton is good, really fucking good at running windows games. That said, don't expect it to be a silver bullet or always work perfectly. A certain percentage of your library will require extra configuration to get running. Another percentage won't run at all. And if you play any modern e-sports game that requires some hellish anti-cheat just don't even bother lmao.

@CarlShvartz if you're into multiplayer games, You're fucked, as they use Anticheat, and most of them are not supported by Linux. A rare exception is Apex Legends, for example. For Single player games? It just works, I've been using proton for years, as I don't play many multiplayer games.

@special-boy @CarlShvartz nopeolder steam OS is outdated, the one steamdeck uses isn't released yet, and it's really arch with PLasma (desktop) and steam pre installed.any linux will worki recommend installing flatpak version of steam anywayshttps://flathub.org/apps/details/com.valvesoftware.Steambecause it's the one that you need to fuck around with the least (aka pretty much not at all)also https://protondb.com

@special-boy @CarlShvartz i see an unofficial one called holoISO, which seems to be that.as far as i know steamOS is just something they made for the steamdeck so it can be preinstalled for it, it would just make more sense for a desktop user to install kubuntu and then steam.game compatibility is only really affected by your gpu and drivers afaik.

Only game in Linux if you have an AMD graphics card because Nvidia drivers are closed source and pretty shitty in Linux, although it's getting better. That said Linux drivers for games are getting massive improvements, in fact there are games that are unplayable with lower spec hardware that are playable at 60fps low settings in POP OS or other gaming focused distros. I know one of the issues facing Linux gaming was the fact you couldn't really do multiplayer. So if you play a lot of multiplayer games you'll miss out on that. I think it has to do with the anti-cheat software not being available on Linux for a lot of games. Maybe that's been fixed I don't know.

Yeah it's actually pretty impressive that you can run Elden ring on such low spec hardware. I looked into the specs of the steam deck and it's amazing that games can run on such underpowered hardware. I think it's a testament to how shitty windows drivers are and how unoptimized they can be.

@Paulyfrog64 @CarlShvartz I can assure you that 90% of multiplayer games that require anti-cheat software are firmly in the “it’s fun with your friends” category.playing pick up sticks is fun with your friends.i.e., most multiplayer games aren’t worth it.

@Paulyfrog64 @CarlShvartz I would like to add and recommend looking at areweanticheatyet.com/; the AC systems like BattleEye and Easy Anti-Cheat allow for Linux use but the developer has to switch it on (Go ask them to turn it on :) - nicely). There's also protondb.com/, for steam games it shows which version of Proton(including GE ver) works and which doesn't. Things like DXVK have actually helped the progression of gamingonlinux (I can legit play games like Death Stranding or Elden Ring on my rig).

@Paulyfrog64 @CarlShvartz There's an alternative launcher for EGS/GOG for linux (and windows) github.com/Heroic-Games-Launcher/HeroicGamesLauncher; and one tool I should mention is lutris.net/, that also helps sets up games with scripts e.t.c.
