Turns out it's a monument to the people who killed tangata whenua and enforced the illegal confiscation of their land and imprisonment of their people, many of whom were then used as slave labour until they died. No alternation has been made to this park to provide this context, or to honour the indigenous people who died defending their autonomy and trying to get the British colonisers to honour the treaty they'd made.Shame.#colonisation #monunents

@RupertBBareGetting NZ colonial history into the school curriculum is one of the more significant long term investments made by the current government. Without the insights I gained from studying Te Reo at high school and getting a glipse into Te Ao Māori, I wouldn't know how gaslighting that monument is, or why.

So they use every means at their disposal, from the pseudo-respectable (Hobson's Pledge) to the utterly contemptible; armies of racist bots and useful idiots intimidating tangata whenua whenever they to to talk about their histories.
