Hey, all you VIDEO GAME playersQuestionAre there any games that you *can't* play, because you become uncontrollably swept up and neglect every other human responsibility?For me, that's World of Warcraft. I've played it twice, separated by five years, for three-week bingesAnd I do mean *binges*. I had to stop because I wasn't sleeping or workingI appear to be helpless before that game. Not sure why. @clive I have to be extremely careful with Crusader Kings 3. I basically cannot account for the time that I spend playing it — I can play for what feels like “15 minutes,” look up and 15 minutes have passed, then play for another “15 minutes,” look up, and see that now two and a half hours have passed.

@clive Any Bethesda RPG. Had to delete a high-level Skyrim character to stop myself from playing. @clive I should add as a caution: it's true. One's first few games of Go produce total confusion, but then interest emerges and quickly grows into obsession. One part of its seductive appeal is the handicapping system, which is simple and does no harm to the symmetry of the game (unlike, say, handicaps in chess), so that players of disparate abilities (as two family members) still play intense and closely fought games, with the handicap automatically adjusted after 3 consecutive wins/losses.

@mtriclot @clive The weirdest thing for me is that I was an obsessive football fan as a kid, but drifted out of it in my 30s...And yet, after downloading Football Manager 2020 when it was free a couple of years ago, I've sunk countless hours into it...I realised recently that I'm playing it the way I'd like real football to be - staying at the same club for 15 years (From non-league to Champions league), lowest wages in the Premiership, investing in youth development etc.

@clive I've actually gotten good at giving myself permission to play game that do this to me, as long as I uninstall them the moment I hit diminishing returns. For me it's either resource-management games or roguelikes. I can tell when playing has become habitual and is actually no longer fun and then the minute I think about it like that, I delete it, treating it as if I "finished" it. At least for me this works and leaves the whole experience a net positive.

@clive @mtriclot Yep - my main gaming obsession is sim racing, but races have defined ends to them (even if practice doesn't).Strategy games are dangerous, as is anything where there are endless unlockables (e.g. Forza, Call of Duty etc), where there's always a challenge nearly complete to get a new car/weapon skin etc. I basically have a small list of games I'm able to play during the week for short breaks, and then some which are 'weekend only' because I know what might happen...

@clive story generators really get me, and oddly I would never have predicted that about myself. Specifically Dwarf Fortress and Rimworld. They grab me, because of the story, in a way that e.g. factorio/citiesSkylines/mindustry don't because the narrative is less apparent in those.

@clive like many others Civ and FTL is on my list too.But for the last couple years, it's mainly Destiny 2. Everything about the game is just perfect for me to get lost in it for hours. After binging it for a long time to finish every main storyline and quest possible, now I'm in a more healthy place of playing couple hours per week to complete anything new or grind for fun (which always has the risk of getting out of control).

@clive I have had tendencies to go on binges like that as well: an early MUD (text based game over telnet), Destiny, Hearthstone. Nowadays I don’t allow myself to play multiplayer games anymore that have competitive/grind/season mechanics built in, since I feel like these kinds of game are predatory. But I did spend disproportionate amounts of my free time on Elden Ring lately.

@clive haha it was WoW for me too! Played it twice, separated by a year. The first time around I was raiding in a guild, got pretty addicted, it was starting to affect my life. So I quit cold turkey. When I rejoined I vowed never to raid or join a guild again, so I played it mostly single player, doing random dungeons and focusing on making gold. I quit for good a few years later after I got bored.

@clive Sadly, WoW and many other games are designed to tap into the psyche that tweaks your brain's reward system. Not much different from Vegas slot machines when you take away the superfluous interactions in WoW. Look up wikipedia's article on Skinner Boxes. Specifically, WoW and many other video game's form of the skinner box are "productivity simulators". They make you feel like you are accomplishing something but really its just like jerking off instead of actually copulating. 😂

@clive I can’t tell if I’m immune to this, or if due to ADHD it’s my pathological move with *everything.* Obsessions are frequent, fleeting, and rarely ever repeated. If I hadn’t developed some ability to maintain low-level basic-human-adulting through the depths of an enthusiasm-binge, I’d have starved in my early 20s.Training fairly consistently at a martial art for nearly 2 years now, resuming multiple times after interruption by COVID lockdowns, feels like significant personal growth.

@clive it’s been a while, so memory may be foggy, but... It’s gorgeous. There’s always a mission. Missions are manageable. The bosses aren’t too hard (I hate boss fights--they’re why I gave up on Breath of the Wild.). The story elements entertain. Achieving the ‘next thing,’ whatever it is, always seems doable in a reasonable amount of time.

Genuinely fun gameplay, social element/component with irl friends I genuinely enjoy, daily checklist grind that is semi-required to keep power level high for raiding. Also, genuinely entrancing story and lore. The whole package.

@clive not a big video game player and I tend to get hooked on casual games as simple as 2048 or Mini Metro... But a classic by which I get super captivated every time I pick it up is Commandos 2.It has elegant mechanics, multi-hour-long episodes, and is part of the last generation of 2D games that got ruined when translated to 3D engines.

@clive I have to keep away from any #MMORPG in general. Used to maintain multiple accounts for multi-boxing in both EverQuest and EVE Online, and it definitely ate into my RL productivity. Sticking to console gaming now. Still do online multiplayer (like Halo sessions, etc) but no more endless MMORPGs for me 👍

@clive About eight years ago I tried it out again as a test to see how cloud streamed games could be (pretty okay then, pretty great now) and I could feel the addiction after game #2

@clive Nice thread. I feel you all on Civilization. Spent about 20 hours this weekend trying to win a Culture victory with the Netherlands. But I take frequent breaks and I'm done for a couple months now.My game of no return was Eve Online back in the glory days of Goonswarm led by The Mitanni. I was in the rebel alliance so to speak (allied against Goonswarm.) It's six years of my life I'll never get back but I don't regret it a bit.

@peterme @clive even that does not fix it though. Too many games make the bosses so much harder that we need like separate scaling systems for bosses and the rest of the game.God of War Ragnarok is experimenting with this by having some “make bosses easier” settings (weirdly, in Accessibility)

@clive Not to dissimilar to WoW, for me it was EverQuest. One day, driving home from work to play over lunch, I realized I'd met no new friends that month. I'd read no books, discovered no new music, produced no creative or written output of my own. My whole life was on hold. It was sobering, and I sold my EQ license to a workmate that afternoon.

@clive Diablo 3, mainly. But anything has the potential. SimCity, Forza Horizon, FreeCell, those old flash games like Poppit. Also this thing I saw on Kevin Kelly’s newsletter called Progress Knight that suddenly consumed like four hours with no warning.
