@koherecoWatchdog you know there are flavors of veganism and if you're almost all the time vegan it's ok to call yourself like that. Being strictly vegan is always a narrow path, simply because animal cruelty and harm can never be fully avoided

@pl I recall a vegan commenting how non-vegans will claim to be vegan in a kind of laughingly annoyed way. This was someone who avoids wine if it has been clarified using egg whites, or refuses medicine if the tablets are red due to using an insect-based red dye. I couldn’t take credit for being vegan. I refuse to pay full price for meat. If the meat is ≥50% off because it expires today, only then will I buy it. The idea being that the meat shouldn’t be wasted or the animal died for nothing.

@pl So I try to strain the profit of the meat industry as much as possible w/out wasting meat. Though I heard that the meat may not go to waste anyway. There are some programs where food on the edge is given to students, which is the best possible outcome when it’s meat b/c it’s a total loss for the meat industry yet the meat is not wasted. I never know if buying the 50% off meat is actually intervening w/that best case scenario.

@koherecoWatchdog @pl It died for nothing anyway, because we don't need to eat meat. That animal was murdered. If someone murdered a dog or a cat, would you consider it a waste if nobody ate their dead body?

@ivereadabookYes of course. To be wasted is to not be utilized or serve any purpose. The dog or cat made use of its own body while alive. When an animal is killed, it can either be used by another animal (human or not), or it can go to waste and rot by some decomposition process (mold, fungus, bacteria, etc).

@ivereadabook “Need” is not a factor in whether something is “wasted”. When I chop the tops off leeks, I don’t /need/ the tops. From there, I have choices: I can throw them away (thus waste), or I can save them for making veg. stock (thus not wasted). The non-wasted usage to make veg broth is not “needed” (I can survive w/out veg broth), but it’s useful & beneficial nonetheless.

@ivereadabook You undermine your own cause with this line of reasoning, despite stating quite well yourself the definition of #veganism¹. Harvesting veg kills countless insects, rodents, & even baby deer due to flaws in farm equipment. Vegans favor veg. only b/c it’s the lesser of evils *generally*. But what if you find a steak in the dumpster that’s still safe b/c it just expired today?① https://mastodon.social/@ivereadabook/109746274329313523

@ivereadabook If an ethical vegan has a choice between a plate of conventionally farmed veg. bought from the local grocer & a steak pulled from a dumpster which is still safe to eat, what does the vegan choose? → The steak. If you eat the plate of veg, you contribute to many killed rodents by the farmer & possible a dead deer. If you eat the steak from the dumpster dive, you contribute ZERO to animal cruelty or exploitation.
