Honest question: do people think violent leftwing extremists such as Antifa are better than non-political thugs or than rightwing groups such as the Proud Boys because they have a “cool” look? Do people have the impression that these people are kind of artsy or cool because of the colorful hair and crossdressing? Is that it? At least, is it part of it?

@Cousin_Isobel I thought it was because they went on a campaign for years claiming to be the ones eradicating the world's "Nazi problem" and that if you didn't support them you supported fascism because they're ANTI fascist so obviously only Nazis would disagree with that

@Tiggy Yes, that’s what I had been going with for a while. I even thought that when I first heard the name “Antifa.” Okay, I thought. I’m against fascism. There are probably still people who are like I was pre-2020, not really following the news closely (I didn’t even have TV and I didn’t check news sites frequently) and going by the name alone. It just struck me that the factor I mentioned could be part of it, too. As a member of Gen X, I always assumed that anyone who looked so unusual could not be a “conformist,” but must be an artsy, “cool” (even fun!) person who believed in everyone doing his or her own thing. In fact, Antifa is the violent enforcer or conformity to elitist thinking. It’s just not what I’d have expected the elite’s violent enforcers to look like in 1994.

@Cousin_Isobel Yes. I think some people are that stupid. The Cult has appropriated the symbolism associated with alternative, hippy, “peace out” lifestyles so as to bamboozle the less critical thinking types amongst us. Wolf in sheep’s clothing and all that. But as we know, a psychopath with pink hair is still a psychopath. It’s the same way that billionaires have capitalised financially off green issue to make a fortune for themselves. Green issues are real but electric cars and biomass power stations are as green as sunset.

@Spring I worry so much about people being fooled into giving over power and money to billionaires who say they are going to save the planet. I don’t fully understand the issues involved, but I feel certain that all the polluting we are doing cannot be good and also that the WEF and political parties that are so corrupt that they will say men can get pregnant if someone pays them to will not possibly solve the problem.

@HebrideanHecate @Cousin_Isobel Antifa at one time meant anti-establishment.Except that this brand-new crop of antifa are just changing which establishment, force and power they support. This time it’s Big Pharma and some kind of twisted futurism. They just do the dirty work of other old fogeys, that are more hypocritical about the power they hold and have.Establishment is Establishment, no matter which face it has.

@Cousin_Isobel @LisbonMuse posted a very good documentary about this recently, I’ll see if I can find it. Having been fully in favour of solar and wind power in theory, seeing the actual environmental impact of they way it’s being done, is horrifying. They are taking us for another ride and earning billions.

@Cousin_Isobel @LisbonMuse Honestly, my eyes have been so opened the last few years, it’s truly depressing. There’s a quote in the documentary along the lines of: if you can’t believe how anyone could do this, that’s why they are billionaires and you’re not. (Although obviously I think we are all glad we are not not if that’s the kind of human you have to be to get there).

@Cousin_Isobel @LisbonMuse ooh I don’t know, I know there are a lot of disappointing men and journalists around but I guess a even stopped clock is right twice a day? I very much want renewable energy to work but clearly there are problems. From a feminist perspective I feel, as with most male journalists, they don’t join the dots at the very end of the documentary. If there are simply too many damn humans on the planet (in addition to our consumption habits) , why not give women complete control of their own bodies and fertility (oh and our lives too!) and trust us, we’d have fewer babies than in a world where women are forced into marriages at age 13 etc and where men want constant sexual access to us. But therein lies the eternal problem - men want the sex and get very angry when they can’t have it, seem to hate us having contraception and abortion, and this inconsistency certainly isn’t an issue they want to face up to.

@Spring @LisbonMuse I’ll come back and comment when I’ve watched it. The thing about having fewer babies is that I wouldn’t want any whole-world program to that end, and most of the American men I’ve known have been pretty eager to delay having kids, or don’t even want to have them at all. I guess we have too much of a good thing, and it’s a lesser problem, by far, than what 13-year-olds in other countries are dealing with.

@Hyolobrika @Cousin_Isobel @LisbonMuse Have you watched it? The narrator asks sadly “oh noes what shall we do??”” about the size of the human population so seemingly does not know what the answer is and has not joined the dots about women’s rights and human population size.

@Spring @Hyolobrika @Cousin_Isobel Yeah that was the part about it I didn't like, the lack of solutions. Human population size is rising heavily in third world nations, like Africa while dropping in western nations so I feel like that connects to what you're saying. Reducing and reusing is also key. If hemp had taken off instead of plastic, that would have helped with waste that breaks down faster. Then not being so scared of nuclear energy. That energy is strong and one reactor lasts at least 50 years, to at least sustain us more cleanly while we work on decreasing population and hopefully be on our way to fusion energy. Because right now wind and solar just wouldn't replace our lifestyle - you'd barely get what you put in to make them.

@Hyolobrika @Cousin_Isobel @LisbonMuse I mean personally I think the rich people have decided to reduce the human population quite considerably and some rather psychopathic solutions to this problem are already under construction but I’m just the resident conspiracy theorist.

@Spring @Hyolobrika @Cousin_Isobel That's really interesting! That's crazy it's so big they need a tricycle to get around. I've never toured one but I was living in South Carolina where they were trying to put one in for awhile, but unfortunately the project got dropped. Also my husband worked on them while he was in the military.

@LisbonMuse @Spring @Hyolobrika @Cousin_Isobel Nuclear would be great if we had stability: stable tectonics, stable climate/weather, stable politics, stable infrastructure, no pandemics, no terrorism. If one or more of those is unstable/SHTF, you lose the ability to have trained scientists managing the reactors at all times, as well as safely managing the waste which will be deadly until the day this planet is consumed by the sun.

@Childfree @Spring @Hyolobrika @Cousin_Isobel I mean we already see some states using nuclear and it providing a major chunk of their power, even with all those risks you mention. Plus the military uses it to power ships and submarines. We just never hear when these things are working. Sure we hear about Chernobyl, but that was kind of the perfect storm (and they didn't tell anyone about what was going on for like a week). Plus they used liquid sodium as coolant which is impossible to cool if it heats up too fast. We use water which less reactive and self cooling. And learning from the soviets and their failed safety measures, we use an automatic safety called scram where it will dead stop the reactor almost instantly. You're right about the waste though. Once the reactor has run its course, what do we do with that? I'd be curious to see a comparison of the waste generated by our fossil fuels and natural gases compared to nuclear. But that's why my point was we should use it to sustain us now while we work on better options like fusion and decreasing population size.- working to lower our waste, etc. Versus claiming we're using "clean" energy which can not sustain us on it's own and how we're approaching it is worse to the environment than just outright using fossil fuels and gas.

@Spring @LisbonMuse I watched about half of “Planet of the Humans”; god, how depressing! Not only do we keep on polluting a lot, but we’re wasting money and mental energy thinking we are doing something. I have paid a little more for “green” energy in the past, and have felt somewhat guilty that I can’t do it now. It was all pointless. It’s pretty much all depressing, but when Apple cut down a forest to put up solar panels, still kept using regular electricity, as well, and bragged about how wonderful and green this all was, that was probably the low point for me.
