@stux even beyond accessibility, I’ve found younger people in general have really embraced subtitles/closed captioning as default. It’s glorious.

@stux I want to add that it's not only for people you can't see. It also helps people with bad internet connections or improves overall comprehension for average people.

@stux alt text can also come in very handy in the future - if your instance's media ever gets purged (or not able to load on anyone else's device, for data limits or w/e), people will still be able to make out a vague sense of what your image isalso - the search feature of mastodon lets you search for alt text, i noticed this a while back after using alt text for years on fedi and it's come in so handy to get old images i've postedobviously accessibility for those hard of vision is the most important part, but it also acts as quality of life for everyone on the fediverse!

@stux I greatly appreciate hearing this without prompting. It's also beneficial for people in large spaces (colleges/airports/sports events). On a personal note, I was mostly deaf when I was a young kid (2-6), and that's a period of time when your brain starts to develop the ability to separate background noise from speech.Even though I have acute hearing now, I still struggle to understand speech with other background noise in the area.

@stux Yes. Even as a sighted person I often read the alt text for images. It can give additional context as to how the poster views/thinks about the image. Additionally, describing my own photos can help me view the image in ways I haven’t previously considered, or see them anew. As for subtitles, I’d often prefer to not add more audio to the environment I’m in. Being able to get the gist of a video without sound is sometimes bliss…

@stux it's easier on mastodon, so I've started doing alt-text on every post w images!!!!

@stux Yes! And some of us with the choice want to “read” the video content in public spaces without locating our earbuds. Most uncaptioned video content misses me also. I love the alt text on Mastodon focusing me on the intent.

@RassilonianLegate @stux @fell Some of the streaming apps have a nice feature that replays the last ~10 seconds with subtitles. Useful if you don't need them most of the time and, like me, prefer to avoid the distraction.
