@nedhamson why, do we not change law so can use extremely intense resources identify locate crims then wherever in the world use special forces extract secretly like Bin Laden, then execute them publicly on social media video, as a message that henceforth penalty is death and no cybcrim is safe anywhere ever again then do it a few more time so clear not a one off. Up the price, all the way. Saudi Arabia, Singapore, crimes can be deterred a good bit. Serving suggestion 😈

@edwin kill people for theft and in public? I think not. Locking them up and figuring out how to be sure they do not do again is the way, along with other preventive measures. Children need to know and honor what is right and wrong before age 7. After that it becomes much more difficult to prevent wrong doing until most age out - 25 - of active criminality.

@Nokidding @nedhamson Imagine a world free of crime, walk in Las Ramblas without pickpockets, leave your car unlocked, women not getting raped. A modern technologically advanced rich society with free speech, good services and infrastructure. Singapore then. Harsh penalties including death, and great surveillance. 3rd safest place on Earth. Harsh works. Singapore has funky politics but happy prosperous people. Apples are not the only fruit 🤣

@edwin @Nokidding I have been to Singapore - it’s safety is not based on fear of executions or long prisons terms - good education and social support for families plays a large role.

@nedhamson @edwin @Nokidding I have an online friend from Signapore, and from what he describes, it sounds great in a lot of ways. His public school education has been amazing: he's really into mathematics like I am, but he's had way more opportunities for advanced math than I had in private school in the US at the same age.

@ML2 @nedhamson @Nokidding yes I imagine life can be pretty good in Singapore. My mum was there for a couple of days’ stopover and loved it. I have a university of Singapore tie with a fish on it. Never studied there but it’s a cool tie 😎

@nedhamson @Nokidding @ML2 so which social ills you want citizens to endure because (maybe you think) people should have “right“ to break laws? Pointless law seems crazy, & ineffective penalties waste tax. So would you be happy to abide by (not sample biased so not Mastodon) majority want? In the UK the majority of people want the death penalty but so far leaders have shied away. Crime harsh on victims so redirect harshness to crims?

@edwin @Nokidding @ML2 I am against the death penalty and have worked against it for years. It does not prevent murders. Too many people have been executed who may well have been innocent and were judged worngly because of race, ethnicity or because they were poor. I do not have a problem with life sentences for premeditated murder.

@nedhamson @Nokidding @ML2 agreed, but I wasn’t advocating that. I was observing that _exceptionally_ harsh punishment, empirically can be shown to deter crime so if people want less crime then maybe (as per capital punishment debate in UK) people do want that level of punishment. Maybe real democracy would be harsh, like some absolute monarchies. Why would one suppose it wouldn’t be? - Baseless assumption?

@nedhamson @Nokidding @ML2 I don’t mean years if appeals on death row commuting to life gaol or a humane death. I mean 15 minutes to appeal then the sword (and crucifix but you’re already dead). Not many murders _per head of population_ in Saudi. There’s capital punishment USA and there’s real harsh. Not same thing, not same effect. There is a crime solution, but it’s not nice. Depends how bad you want actual results.

So indirectly it very much is to do with that. Whether we live or die of starvation climate change and disease, let alone a few executions, is very much in their hands, not me, not you.
