After using an M1 MacBook Air almost exclusively for the last 12 months, I'm firing up two other laptops to start digging back into #Linux: the HP DevOne and the StarLabs StarBook. (I know you'll ask, so I'm rocking the #KDE spin of #Fedora 37)I've come to one conclusion: I hate fans now. I loathe them. They are the most offensive thing to my ears since Nickelback covered Metallica.

@killyourfm Yeah my M1 Macbook Pro is my favourite machine now... I was using my Lenovo Yoga 2 yesterday and the fans were annoying me. The fans on my Dell G5 really really annoy me. And my desktop is just a heat-producing jet engine.

@solarisfire Yea, I've (sadly but resolutely) ditched my desktop PC. And it hasn't been easy, because it's a compute and 4K gaming monster. But it's also loud, hot, and power hungry.

@LinuxLounge @AsahiLinux That's awesome! I haven't checked in on it in some months. However, unless every hardware component (WiFi, Bluetooth, GPU, etc) is working flawlessly under Linux, it's a no-go.

@killyourfm I've had a 16" M1Pro for a year now, the fans are barely audible when they're in action...I wish other chip manufacturers moved to ARM or RISC-V, this is an era where we need to push efficiency over absolute performance

This experience today led me to finally fire up my big bad #Linux desktop PC (a Falcon Northwest Talon) for the first time in about 10 months. (If you weren't here for it, long story, but I got sick of the waste heat, the noise, and being tethered to my desk, especially after getting a #SteamDeck). But OH MY GOD I forgot how sublime #KDE #Plasma was on a 4K 144Hz panel!It might be harder to leave off this time around...

@killyourfmI've been looking for a replacement for my Google Pixelbook (2017) and have been leaning toward a MacBook Air, but can't help but think there must be some alternative out there that will let me run Linux and still offer the same benefits; mainly battery life though.

@killyourfm If you donāt mind, please share your fan-noise and overall impression of DevOne. Itās based on the HP series that, in my experience would try to take off (at least when I had use it in a Windows Enterprise environment) with any task. But with the current promo code the price of a DevOne is ~1000 USD. Still only ships within U.S. :(
