#Debian 11 does not install an OpenSSH server by default. And some complain #OpenBSD or #NetBSD are lagging behing Linux... 🙄 Seriously, though it's 2023 - a machine without OpenSSH is simply ridiculous. And before people start responding: "what about a workstation?": guys and gals, this is a SERVER, with NO GUI. Yes, I want my OpenSSH on a FREAKING SERVER.

@ParadeGrotesque The last few installs I've done, I've really been wishing that more Linux distros had an installation method like Raspbian.I don't want to create an *installer*, what I want is to config and burn the *actual system* to a storage device, then take that device and physically install it in the target system, turn it on, and have it boot up into the OS, complete with network configuration, WiFi, and an SSH daemon running. Totally headless. Why is that so hard?

@ParadeGrotesque I got mad at Debian when they removed ed from the default package list.

@ParadeGrotesque I tried to tell them that ed is the standard text editor, but they wouldn't listen!

@ParadeGrotesque Wait , who says BSD is lagging behind linux? We have better audio, better midi, better security, better "no systemd", better actual vi and not symlink to vim, better not needing a whole distro just to distinguish between WM, better no bluetoosh available unless it's not a massive security hole, better not kowtowing to corporations wants and needs first, better at having zero influence from RMS, better ... (am i annoying yet :P)

@pkw You are preaching to the choir here! 🤓 And, honestly, the only thing in your list worth mentioning is: "no systemd". You can stop right here!

@ParadeGrotesque Yeah I kinda tangented on your point, which I totally agree with. How do you do anything on a server (or desktop) without ssh(d) ? (rhetorical, you don't of course)Alpine isn't bad. It still doesn't have a real vi, but i can limp along with neovim. (it has minimal vi that doesn't have line number option)

@ParadeGrotesque how would debian know if it's a server or workstation? the default of not installing anything that exposes service ports to the net makes sense to me, security. you can tell it to install ssh from the installer, at later stages (or through preseeding)

@pkw @ParadeGrotesque Not to start a flame war… but, which BSD would you recommend?(I started long ago with bsd because they had cd rom support and linux didn’t have that at the time)

@philsplace @pkw The one I use is #OpenBSD - FreeBSD has become too "opaque" for my taste and NetBSD requires too much hand holding.OpenBSD "just works", its documentation is near perfect, it is stable, easy to install and update and improving steadily. The focus on security is a big plus in my book, so what's not to like?

@philsplace By the way, #opensd is far from perfect: if your apps require a lot of disk space, or extreme SMP performance, tons of CPU, complex virtualization setup or exotic applications... You may find it limiting. But as a daily driver, or a small server, on a reasonable (= not bleeding-edge hardware) config? It's just great.@pkw

@ParadeGrotesque @pkw I probably should have mentioned… used mainly as a server in a LAMP stack.I am just really sick and tired of dealing with systemd right now. So, playing with something else for a while might be refreshing.

@philsplace @pkw As far as I know, a LAMP stack is not a problem on OpenBSD.All its components are available in the OpenBSD ports, and its performance should be more than adequate for most tasks.

@philsplace @ParadeGrotesque @pkw agree on NetBSD being too fussy, but what do you mean by “opaque” in this context? Some critical system component/s not readily accessible?

@ParadeGrotesque There is a checkbox in the installer
