If being married to the perfect woman, having a fine son, owning a crumbling cozy house with a mortgage, and still working at the age of 64 is "rich," then sure.But the only free thing I get is tickets to UMD women's basketball games, and I get those by working here (which, I assure you, does not make a person rich).I like the games, though, so I have to say that, if I'm rich, getting the tickets for free doesn't bother me.Rich(er) people getting more than tickets? Maybe.

@violethousekid @pizzapal I guess it all started with the Oscars many years go when I learned about the super expensive gift bags they get for free. But the idea that they get awards "for doing good jobs" is vulgar. My dad did a good job at his workplace his whole life. Where's his award and gift bag?(continued in next toot)

@violethousekid @pizzapal But the thing that pissed me off last night was Adam Savage getting this beutiful hand-made guitar from a fan. Like at retail it would be easily 5 grand. And he can't even play.I mean he seems like a nice guy, but it's not like he's a first responder saving lives every day.The stanning of the wrong people in our culture is another thing that bothers me. Again, Adam is probably a fine human, but all he does is run a youtube channel.

@Ricardus @pizzapal Ah, yes I couldn't agree more.Our nation's (and to a further extent, the world's) priorities are infuriating.But the truly frustrating bit is that it persists...and gets worse apparently.Like, it seems that ours are not unpopular opinions. But why then does society not seem to translate popular opinions into change through legislation & adjustment of social norms over time?

There's an incentive that keeps us watching.I don't really care for television at all, really.Why do we still have the institution of tv when it seems as if it would have been phased out by technology by now?Same for movie theatres.It's cultural & I think that's hard to let go of.Portrayal of these institutions as 'normal' & 'popular' is vital to their existence.

@Ricardus @pizzapal my neighbor is a painter with no tv, no phone & I'm pretty sure (gasp!) no computer.He rarely even gets mail.Or visitors for that matter.He seems pretty normal to me, though.We have short conversations occasionally in the hallway & he seems like an average, reasonably happy guy.Maybe we the media eaters are the ones torturing ourselves with a seemingly voluntary habit for watching a window to the lives of the rich & popular. 🤷♀️

Plus I saw Adam do something once in a video where he was pretending not to be rich. He was talking about upgrading his lathe with a new expensive toy, but then said "I don't make TV money anymore so I can't do this," but a month later he did a video installing the new part.So disingenuous.

But when the rich are the only ones getting stuff, that's not okay with me.And it does seem to be the way we're headed. Money has always been magnetic, attracting more of itself. But it's on the verge of becoming a few black holes, sucking everything from the rest of us.No, not okay.

@Ricardus One of the worst aspects of it all is how they're trying to convince us that paying more for less is chic. Look at all the YouTubes promoting "cool" city apartments that are half the size of the units in the original structure.We're supposed to think it's oh-so-trendy to have a fold-out desk so the kitchen corner can double as an office corner and also as an ironing board. Might be less per unit to live in such a cell, but landlord gets to rent twice as many of them at higher $/ft^2.

@Ricardus Agreed. Giving people of limited means good advice on how to survive is fine. But money is power and the people with the most money are using that power to skew access to wealth in their own favor. We need a system that won't limit wealth, but that will skew access to wealth in favor of those with the least of it.1/2
