@thegibson postings like this make me realize if i had to start over I couldn't get a job in my own field.

@purple @kusuriya you're not, what I am saying is is that everything on the list is not what we really expect... some sort of combination is nice.

@thegibson yeah I know that now but younger me would have not had the courage of a 20 something frat bro to be like "youd be lucky to hire me" It probably would have prompted me to actually go to college when I had the opportunity to get my living expenses covered and do it for basically free.

@thegibson @purple Yeah to sort of echo TheGibson here, since Im actually responsible for hiring to some degree where I am now.The list is what would be a purple squirrel. If you had everything on it and werent a total tool during the interview we would have found our magical unicorn and would be overjoyed to hire you.The certs are almost never a complete waste if you're starting out, they make up for lack of work experience showing us you understand the basics of $foo. Where they become a waste is at my level where Im Sr moving into Staff/Principal Security engineer, 16 some odd years of tech experience with 5 being related to security and automation in some fashion a Security+ is basically meaningless for me.

@kusuriya@hackers.town @thegibson@hackers.town i have a crapton of debian & rh sysadmin experience that ended just shy of a decade ago. what kills me is how little things have changed, and how easily i've kept up with those changes at a hobbyist level. back then i didn't hold any certs, i had just been coasting on experience and a locally booming tech sector since high school. due to the time gap in particular, but also as a bit of a "practice drawing", i have decided to grab my RHCSA. that alone will open up all the ground level doors i'm interested in, although i'll likely need more to make my current pay grade.btw thanks, ya'll o/

@kusuriya @purple yep.I have no current certs... because at this point it would just be silly.

@purple @thegibson no problem, and that is a good appoach and should open up more than ground level if you have a work experience gap of some length, but remember in general the DevOps, Security, and Sysadmin fields overlap heavily and are heavily understaffed so gaps dont mean as much as they used to as long as you can show your knowledge is recent and relevant during the interview. If I didn't hire people that had gaps or were strict Cybersecurity professionals id likely never fill any of my job vacancies.

@kusuriya@hackers.town @thegibson@hackers.town thanks for the words of confidence, i'll try to keep the same wit about me as i do with my current career's contract interviews. in major cities, courier agencies are so understaffed that they don't even bother with an interview and will just reply with the paperwork if you have ANY experience.
