I'd love to know exactly who, in NZ Gov't, decided that it was a good idea to be "cloud first", where the cloud they picked was exclusively offshore & owned by foreign mega corporations. I'd love to understand their thought processes & then have the opportunity to explain everything completely wrong with that decision & policy. Similarly, I'd love to know who thought allowing the NZ Gov't to become 100% functionally dependent on Microsoft corporation technologies was A-Ok. Because it is not.

I note, too, that shifting NZ Gov't-hosted cloud services to onshore services run by the same US mega corporations isn't much of an improvement. Those corporations are subject to the US Cloud and Patriot Acts, which renders them untrustable.

@lightweight Say a large (for #NZ) government department's pop-up service is running on a US megacorp cloud, and due to a banking malfunction the bill isn't paid. How much effort is a US megacorp going to go through to try to contact the account holder before cutting off the service? I can't see this issue being limited to the public sector either.

@zl2tod @lightweight Indeed. I'm aware of other significant goings on but can't talk about them. I should imagine others are in the same boat, and one wonders how many.

@vik @lightweight Aye, even I, an outsider without role and bereft of consideration have identified and quietly resolved some less significant issues in the last year. The various Exchange bugs in that time seem to have been particularly troublesome for others.
