You’re in front of a pair of buttons that control a pair of trolleys on adjacent tracks. On one track is a healthy 18-year-old. @Piss_Ant The idea here is that you’re forced to make the value judgement in order to save lives. It’s definitely not evil given that making your choice is saving lives in this hypothetical.

@PapaPole No, this is intentional. With the classic trolley problem, it’s about whether you can bring yourself to flip a switch which objectively saves lives (one person versus five, and there’s no differentiation about age and health).With this, it’s harder to make a value judgement, so I modified the scenario to force the reader to make the call.

@dave i dont think you are understanding me. there is no reason to have 2 trolleys. i get the age thing. i kill the old people no sweat. you have one trolley and you choose which of two tracks it goes down. in your example it sounds like i have a button that can stop each trolley running on its own track but i arbitrarily only decide to push one of them.

@PapaPole The alternative would be that the trolley backs up to get on the other track or something, otherwise you can make no choice and the people on the other track would live.

@dave trolley is headed toward a track switcher. the track switcher is only halfway between settings. if you dont choose a track to go down the trolley will derail and tumble off a cliff killing all 100 people riding it.
