The entire Santos campaign was created from thin air. Campaign finance laws regulate donations to candidates and their associated PACs to cap the total amounts that can be contributed by any one entity. How to get around that? Create a Trojan candidate who not many would notice, who won’t generate any activism, and whose losing effort wasn’t supposed to ever be reviewed or audited. Think about it. Why Santos? He has no political experience, business background or a degree in anything related to government. He had lost a run in the same district just two years earlier. His campaign effort was lackluster. Why the NY 3rd CD? It’s a district that was formed by a recent redistricting. It is a largely cohesive, wealthy area that covers portions of Queens and Nassau. The Democratic nominee was low profile and uncontroversial. It had an ability to launder money the mob could love.New details link George Santos to cousin of sanctioned Russian oligarch-https://wapo.st/3IRkE2i

@TonyStark My favorite new detail is that he even stole the designer scarf he's wearing in the video outside the Capitol on 1/5 from his roommates (plus their shirts, cell phones, and checks). He could not be any more of a fraud.https://www.msnbc.com/the-last-word/watch/george-santos-s-old-roommates-say-he-stole-shirts-checks-a-designer-scarf-159913541963

@peedee Once again, local newspapers have been hollowed out and the one in the area is only a weekly. Its editorial staff went so far as to say that they really wanted to endorse a Republican but could not because Santos wasn't trustworthy.Santos' Democratic opponent, Robert Zimmerman, tried to get the attention of larger media, but they were only interested in other things. It's New York. There was a big governor's race and Zimmerman was told he was going to win and no one had the resources.Blame the owners of corporate media being more interested in profits than in social responsibility. We don't have a much of a media responsible to the people. Local outlets do what they can, but they don't have a lot of resources, and large city papers are either more interested in national news or have mostly become wire services and aren't doing much of a job serving their cities as they once did.@TonyStark

@MariaHill @TonyStark the media is covering the Santos lying story extensively. so you can't say the media doesn't care about this. They love it.

@peedee Sure, now that it has come to light that Santos is a fraud. In October it was a candidate saying "hey, this guy went from making $50k per year to having all this money and I think you should look into it." No one had piles of details like they do today. Of course it's more interesting now that it's an actual elected official caught lying rather than a candidate suspected of it.@TonyStark

@MariaHill @TonyStark there was no reason for not knowing basic things like "he didn't go to Baruch college". that's a phone call by a junior staffer. Once you know that you say "what else is there?" and it all comes out, just as it did after the election.

@ErinPC @TonyStark @MariaHill Did anyone bother to go to the media and say "look at our oppo report! the guy is lying about going to college!" ?you can't blame the media for not reporting on your opposition report if you don't share it with anyone in the media.

@peedee @TonyStark @MariaHill yes of course they took it to the media. Why else would they commission it?The NYT acknowledges that Dems tried to get the media to cover the story, but speculate that budget cuts in news rooms may have played a part in the lack of coverage. Nevertheless, they still manage to spend a lot of time blaming Dems anyway…https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/13/nyregion/george-santos-republicans-lies.html

@ErinPC @TonyStark @MariaHill I had not read this article before. It seems that the Z campaign did make some effort to alert the media to Santos history and they did pass. I stand corrected. I still think it was a colossal error for Z not to raise the issue in his own campaign materials, but that's a different question. Unbelievable that the NYT, who has been like a dog with a bone on this story since the election, passed before hand! Embarrassing.

@peedee @ErinPC @TonyStark @MariaHill We have all heard it before on how everything that Republicans do that is bad for US is the fault of us Democrats so I don't think you need to keep trying to get us to accept your hypothesis.

@GreenFire @ErinPC @TonyStark @MariaHill Yeah, don't expect R's to act with any integrity -- you have to point out your adversaries flaws if you want to win elections. You don't have to accept that hypothesis, but it works well when it is employed.

@GreenFire @MariaHill @ErinPC @peedee I think it’s important to remember here that the original post is about Russian money laundering which is a pretty big deal and was just uncovered by the Washington Post yesterday. A lot of this wasn’t easy to find and my original post explains some additional things about the district.I really don’t want to argue about this for 48 hours so if there’s more of that, I’d loved being untagged. Thanks.

@peedee @TonyStark @MariaHill “Researchers also turned up some red flags in Mr. Santos’s biography: multiple evictions;…details about his involvement with Harbor City… and more recent suspicious business dealings; as well as apparent discrepancies in his financial disclosure forms that raised questions about the source of hundreds of thousands of dollars he had lent his campaign.”
