One of the things I hate about the Fediverse: The “I have an opinion and if you don’t 100% agree with it I will block you” attitude. You know what? Here’s an idea: If you don’t want to discuss, don’t even post to begin with. The entire idea behind this place is to discuss, not to shout into the void.

Totally agree; @js "Question" and then claiming it wasn't a question, but rather an utterance of frustration. If you don't care to listen, especially when the word choice is biased, don't say it.

@js This is not a Fediverse speciality, this attitude has been around since killfiles exist. :)And honestly it is fine. Someone doesn't want to talk with you. Accept it and go discuss with someone else.

@js@mstdn.io people those without internal validation are dependent on the validation of others. Even mild disagreement conflicts with this. This is what's behind a majority of people wanting to have their cake (free and open experience), but eat it too. (Suppress all criticism).That said, I can understand someone enforcing quality control for disagreement. I can hardly blame people who block inane and aggressive responses to thoughtful inquiry.

@dkl I feel like it’s worse here. My toot was triggered by someone saying how Mastodon should be changed and in the same post saying everybody who has differing opinion will immediately be blocked.

@js I'd block such people. 😁This "I block everybody who has different opinions than me" is a valid approach when you're building a very narrow echo chamber.My personal approach is to learn about different opinions here and get feedback on my topic from peers.Some people who can't differ between a valid discussion and personal attacks need to be blocked IMHO in order to stay sane here.

@publicvoit I mean, of course I want to hear different opinions. If my opinion is valid, that shouldn’t be a threat to it. So it’s weird to me why you wouldn’t want anyone disagree with you? Other than you already know your opinion isn’t valid and wouldn’t stand against other opinions?

@jsI don't really think it's a huge deal. Mastodon blocking culture is free and loose because, historically, this has been a place queer people went to to get some peace and camaraderie. On other social media platforms we're expected to humor "just asking questions" dudes when they question our humanity or we're seen as bad and rude, so the blocking culture here came as a response to that. It's not really intended for "we have slight disagreements on tech" and more "I don't actually have to interact with someone when I can tell they're rolling up their sleeves to be a dick"

@js I agree with the sentiment, and when it comes conversations with nuance (which is most of them), I try to explain my opinion to the best of my ability and even discuss issues with people I have strong disagreements with. I like coming to an understanding with others.That being said, I still do block liberally. I'm not interested in debating anything, really, with bad faith actors.I think it's just hard for many to assume good faith. Discerning such things is a skill, after all.

@js I haven't seen much of that yet, but I also find that vibe frustrating. If someone saw fit to broadcast their opinion widely (or at least, publicly enough where I could see it in my feed), but they're not willing to countenance the very idea that someone might feel differently, that would seem selfish and arrogant (except in a very small number of cases, but then there's little point in the original post anyway).I'm not a fan of people who are "output only" on social media or RL.
