@tomlevenson I used to argue with a barman at our local when I was in my late teens that one should ask for "two Pernods and black" not "two Pernod and blacks"...hahaha. Strange chaser with a pint of ale, I know...

@sciencebase @tomlevenson See, this is why we in the U.S. don't let teenagers drink in pubs It's not a moral or health thing; it's just that teenagers can be a bit obnoxious even without alcohol, and adults shouldn't have to listen to them, especially at the end of a long workday.

@sciencebase @tomlevenson @msbellows yeah, I worked in a bar in 1975, and it would fill up with 18-21s at weekends. Lager and lime was very popular. A shot of lime squirted into a pint glass containing some of the godawful excuse for draught lager made by British breweries at that time.

@Bitnik @sciencebase @tomlevenson @msbellows And then there's the "snakebite and black", half(ish) a pint of cider, half(ish) a pint of lager, and a dash of blackcurrant cordial. Invented for a specific legal reason: You can't serve half a pint in a pint glass, cos weights and measures law, but 3 or more fluids is a cocktail, which isn't covered by that law.And everyone thought that the cloudiness (fruit/grain proteins reaction) "got you drunker", so pubs wanted a get-around to serve it.

@_thegeoff @Bitnik @tomlevenson @msbellows We used to drink snakebite...absoolutely vile...half a Bulmer's original topped up with a can of Special Brew......the girls used to add blackcurrant cordial to theirs...Landlords in decent pubs didn't like to serve it as it was cloudy and put off their grownup drinkers.There wasn't a reaction or anything, just strong cider+lager that got your drunk

A 1.5 oz shot of Wild Turkey and a 1.5 oz shot of peppermint schnapps in a Pyrex beaker, with a wisp of half-and-half placed in the center using the finger-on-a-cocktail-straw method.

My girlfriend came in to check on me and pointed out a dead cockroach on the floor, upon which I exclaimed, "I didn't kill it! I swear I didn't kill it!" and burst into tears.
