One of the most obvious facts regarding the GOP is that they have forgotten how to do anything constructive, apparently on purpose. They excel at obstructionism, lying, misdirect, infighting, and electing clowns. Now they want to "investigate" a laundry list of fallacious "plots" and impeach all they think are their enemies. Clearly, they are not prepared to govern and electing a weakened McCarthy as Speaker confirms that point.Republicans have zero interest in continuing to build on the Democrats’ work on infrastructure or anything else. They are a fractured collection of individuals calling themselves a party that have no real policies or ideas of what can be done to move this country forward because their idea of making things better is regression. The Republican Party’s core message is white grievance and the rejection of the common good. That won’t solve any modern problems.https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/15/opinion/mccarthy-republicans-coming-apart.html?smid=url-share

@TonyStark Republicans don’t legislate. They’ve shown for a while now that they’re not about governing. In 2017-2019, they had the presidency, Supreme Court and comfortable majorities in both houses of Congress. What did they accomplish with it? A tax cut for the wealthy and corporations… That’s it.Nothing on health care, environment, our decrepit roads and infrastructure, etc.

@TonyStark McCarthy & the GOP will rue the day he became Speaker. The extremists on the right aren't finished. They're just beginning. They will make McCarthy's life a total nightmare. McCarthy stands for nothing & he's traded away his ability to stand for anything. He will be a weakest speaker ever of a weak majority whose contribution (besides an appetite for chaos) will be limited to obstruction & performance art. The speaker position has now been devalued, demoted & become ceremonial for McCarthy. The most crucial concession by McCarthy was his willingness to restore what is known as the “motion to vacate the chair,” a procedure that allows rank-and-file members to ask for a vote to remove the speaker. Odds are we'll see that vote in a few months. They’re a party of windbags & bullies, content to see the country fail instead of working together for the good of the country.

@MJ Some said before the 2022 election that the Democratic party was dying. They had identified the wrong party, It's the Republicans who are in big trouble. Divided parties lose elections. Parties that indulge their most unrepresentative dogmatists alienate the rest. Parties that put ideological purity over governing become neither ideologically pure nor effective. This is the most irrefutable advice the Republican Party will ever receive. Unfortunately they lack wisdom to accept it.

@ddbuskirk Indeed. People who want to burn it all down should be careful what they wish for. Historically, the collapse of governments has most often lead at least in the short term to widespread violence, economic collapse, and suffering, and often has ended up with a more authoritarian and oppressive government than the original.Of course, right wingers want that last part. Nobody else should.

@TonyStark You forgot: "Masters of Both Side-ism".COPIES of Top Secret docs found on Hillary's phone & private server led to YEARS of "Lock Her Up!"Trump KNOWINGLY STEALS HUNDREDS of Top Secret docs (loses at least 47), ignores multiple subpoenas, calls the docs "mine", says he declassified them "just by thinking about it", and the GOP cries "Witch Hunt!"Biden's OWN lawyers find docs no one even knew were missing, turns them over, and the GOP opens an investigation. #JFC.

@MugsysRapSheet @TonyStark So we're clear here, it's the information in the document that is classified as Top Secret (or whatever) not the actual paper. Copy or original, the crime is the same. But yes, like Ms Clinton's case, Mr Biden's is incompetence and/or plain old sloppiness not malice. As far as we know.I've said it before. Sleepy Joe's messaging needs to be along the lines of "OMG, this is incredibly embarrassing, this is entirely on me, and we're still searching." But it won't.

@VE2UWY @TonyStark Point being, 1) #GOPHypocrisy and 2) The crime is NOT "the same" unless she copied/digitized the documents herself. If *someone else* made the copies and sent them to her, then the crime (if any) is *theirs* not hers. There is no situation Biden could mitigate this when Trump supporters are so desperate to "both sides" the issue.

@TonyStark @MugsysRapSheet Go for it! I thought he was a terrible candidate and choice and voted for him happily what with him not being a fascist and all. I am also happy that he was able to convince the Congress to pass a repeal of the phony debt ceiling after the election so we could avoid the planned attack on the nation by the #GOP. Wait - did he do that?

@TonyStark I'm curious to see if that idea of "a fractured collection of individuals" comes into play the next two years. The GOP was such a well-oiled machine for years that everyone in the family protected one another. But that seems not to be the case these days with in-fighting spilling into public view. Do you think they'll find their way back to that mob family mindset... or are they doomed to permanent fracture because of their mercurial temperaments?

@stopgopfox That is an excellent question.I think it could easily fall apart. McCarthy is pretty much doomed to be subjected to repeated efforts to remove him. It’s very unlikely that the wacko faction aka the No Freedom Caucus are going to move to the center. It also seems that for the time being that the short list of possible more sane Republicans (I’m looking at some who are in Biden-won districts here) aren’t going to go with the Matt Gaetz faction.I’m sure you’ve seen a few of them call for less extreme policies on abortion, for example, but look at what’s happened just this week- ban efforts. Their own voters reject ballot measures there. If Dems can keep hanging together, which Jeffries is managing quite well, I see Republicans fracturing further.Curious to your thoughts, also.

@TonyStark @stopgopfox I think the Democratic Representatives miss a golden opportunity by not backing a moderate Republican for Speaker instead of their steadfast support for Jefferies. If just a few centres Republicans had joined them we wouldn't be in this dysfunctional mess

@SkipFleming @TonyStark @stopgopfox Your theory is based on a myth. There are no "centrist" or moderate Republicans. They either retired, got defeated in primaries, or rolled over for the fascists. You are who you roll with. Dem House members were right in backing Jeffries. It won't be the last time, and greater things are coming.

@TonyStark @MJ It's like they have a chip on their shoulders.....a grudge against Dems so bad that they are willingly trying to destroy America to remain racists like Putin. What remains interesting to me is WHY they still garner so many lower income, less educated voters when it is obvious that they don't care about them....only about being in office. Once there, they are a do nothing but obstruct party. No ideas for taking the country forward. They are extinct, but Santos plans to save them.

@BenCisco @SkipFleming @stopgopfox @GreenFire I was talking to a mod here last night and mentioned there was also a terrible WaPo take that week saying progressives should take responsibility and be able to get Republicans to elect a reasonable Speaker with them. The problem comes from all over, someone reads it, and then we get what starts here. Again, no Republican was available to work with Democrats. That’s on Republicans. We can’t work with what isn’t real.

@TonyStark Thanks for not calling me out by name without asking. I will say it was me though. 🙂That was our discussion: name one Republican willing to work with Democrats. Who were Democrats to support? There are a handful of Republicans who aren't outright election deniers and are just voting for an election denier for Speaker. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA) has said he'll consider a discharge petition to raise the debt ceiling, but only if he gets concessions from Democrats, which probably means cuts to Social Security and Medicare. As a Democrat, is that something you want your Representative to support? I don't want mine to (and mine definitely won't). Who else is halfway reasonable? There were 72 Republican House members who voted to certify Biden's election. 53 of them remain in Congress. Who is going to work with Democrats? French Hill? Chip Roy? Ken Buck? Patrick McHenry?@BenCisco @SkipFleming @stopgopfox @GreenFire

@TonyStark Further fracturing on the right seems almost inevitable, but I'm starting to think McCarthy might hold on a little longer than most are expecting. If they boot McCarthy, there is virtually no one else who will allow all the factions to behave in such a selfish, undisciplined way. McCarthy is uniquely weak and lets Gaetz, Greene, Jordan all be loudmouths even if the undisciplined talk and policy positions hurt the party long-term. I hope McCarthy stays because he lets them run wild!

@stopgopfox @TonyStark To me you have three factions. The ones who actually want to do the work, a vanishingly small number in the Grift Old Party now. Then the bombthrowers, enabled by gerrymandering. I *think* they want to keep their jobs but are willing and/or unintelligent enough to cut off their noses to spite their faces. Finally, the ones who are primarily motivated by getting re-elected. The direction in the next two years is probably driven by their calculus on electability.

@TonyStark If you start with the famous quote from St. Reagan, "Government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem", as the first principle then today's #GOP is just the logical apotheosis. They can't physically discard government but they can render it ineffectual through incompetence, obstinacy, voter suppression, greed and laziness. The legislature where I live is a prime example. Gerrymander the state into a semi-permanent majority and then refuse to govern.
