i wish i had the faith to trust in a higher power to guide me. it seems very comforting to rest on the assumption that god has a plan for you. but i don’t think anyone has a plan for me and i think it is extremely common for people to suffer for very long times with no justification or reward.

@animeirl i agree. for a while i thought maybe i was buddhist as i think that’s the world view i most closely align with—we are permanently stuck on the wheel of suffering, being born and living and dying, and we can only hope to do good and push whatever eternal soul we might have in the right karmic direction, so eventually we might escape the wheel and attain nirvana. i really like that. but.. buddhism also involves a lot of detachment from earthly pleasures and i’m pretty shit at that part. >_>;

I’ve mentioned it before I think, but I am what many consider a Protestant. I’m not very good at being religious and I definitely ain’t no poster boy for faith or any of that.Ecclesiastes 9 speaks on this subject briefly. Ecclesiastes (which means the teacher, which is believed to be Solomon) laments the evil that is unjust rewards. Funnily enough stating that a “living dog is better than a dead lion” encouraging the reader to not lose hope whilst suffering, since we still have breath in our lungs.If you’ll indulge me, my experience with faith and suffering is my only point of reference.I’ve suffered a good amount in my life, and I continue to have little to show for it. Though my evil bent has all but left my mind; for the most part the growth has happened internally. I’m still alone, I have little support, and money is something I watch pretty consistently. I live in a place where most don’t understand me or what I do or why, and love is conditional.Though I am a different person, mostly for the better. I recognize that while I still have a short temper, and have little trust for anything, I am capable of love, something I didn’t have before.I know not why or for what reason, but in the last few years my faith has grown in such a way that I can still take my burdens in prayer and find a way to smile and sing as I go through it. I’m reminded that with every day I grow in small ways to a better tomorrow. If I had been given much, I would not have wielded it appropriately.In my experience when I chose to walk with God, that’s when a lot of things in my life started to actually work for the better (I know it’s anecdotal evidence, but my faith is bolstered by the fact that I have done certain things by faith that should have killed me, but in the end, not a scratch, no adversary to meet me)I apologize that this has been just me talking about myself; though I don’t have any other example to pull from that I know other than my own experience. Faith, or no faith; you are still breathing and that’s a good enough reason to hold fast to hope for a better tomorrow, and you are growing into an older and wiser person. For what it’s worth, I do pray for you when I think of you; since I know you struggle at times, which I think it’s good that you see just how shitty everything is, and you bounce back; this happens because you have yet to give in to the mentality of “that’s just the way it is” and I hope you never do, as it robs many of their virtue. I find it very relatable also, so I get it, and I have empathy for it.Hopefully that kind of gives a little insight into how “we” (those who cling to the higher power) think about suffering. It’s there to grow us closer to our God, and it makes for a better person.Hope you’re having a good evening Blessing! :)

It's easier to accept shit like kids getting cancer and the existence of nuclear weapons and even wondrous, not-terrible things like that planet made of diamonds if you figure that existence is just strange and chaotic."Everything happens for a reason" sounds comforting to some people, but it can open a door to agonizing over trying to figure out what that reason is because so many things seem cruel, unnecessary, and contradictory if we assume that they were done intentionally by a benevolent god.You could circle around and say that god is just strange and chaotic, but I think an incomprehensible god is just as bad as no god.It's quite a pickle.

You put your faith in "God's plan" but what if there is no plan? You've ended up giving up your will, your ability to influence events, for no reason. Also, if you have the ability to choose differently, you can assume God gave it to you. I think there's something about the fact that individuals have their own thought processes, that at least SEEM unique and guided by the ego, that plays into the divine "plan", whatever that is.But this wouldn't be convincing at all to a true believer.

@Moon It's not really ironic when you take into account the major thing that characterizes Christ's victory isn't justice but mercy. A God who can control all things but chooses not to. He could have struck down the Romans who nailed Him to wood but forgave them instead.I think our human side makes it hard to accept that even if every little thing can be controlled, it wouldn't be interesting anymore if you did. The Bible is Truth, it teaches a lot of science thousands of years before it's time and has many fulfilled prophecies.Catholics only open the Bible to justify their pride and hatred, I agree. However they were also the biggest opponents to the Bible. Men were burnt at the stake for owning a Bible or affirming the teachings in it. "As christians we do sincerely believe that Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead for us. It is because of what we believe that we do good works. It is a response to and not the cause of our salvation. James 2:17, "So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."Of couse, I am not the greatest at living out this faith. I have evil thoughts and desires and usually I lay those bare for all of the fedi to see. I know that I am probably the worst person to try to explain these things, because I know that I still gove into temptations very quickly.I also think that christians spend too much time arguing inline with other christians, when the bible tells us to work out our salvation with "fear and trembling."TL;DR the good works are a response to God's love for us and are our part of salvation. The greater part belonging solely to God.
