People sometimes ask me: Michael, why don’t you switch to Wayland? My Wayland experience every time I try:

@zekjur wow this is messed up! I did not experience such a thing in the past two years of using wayland. Can you elaborate a bit on your set up?

@zekjur @Amirography > NVIDIAThere's your problem. NVIDIA hates Wayland and has been trying to prevent it for years, and now that there's no way around it, they provide horribly broken drivers in an attempt to hold the ecosystem back with "See? Wayland doesn't work". As soon as you don't use NVIDIA, it all works as a dream. NVIDIA hopes you'd ditch Wayland for them, but you should really ditch NVIDIA for Wayland.

@js @zekjur I should agree with Jonathan that probably the main culprit is nvidia. Sway is very hostile towards it as well. However, depending on the build, emacs may have caused some problems as well. As I remember, the original emacs client is not completely an x window client, and it's doing something on itself. Maybe that caused glitches with xwayland.I have 3 suggestions that might help.

@js @Amirography I would love to switch to AMD or Intel, but their cards just can’t get my Dell UP3218K to work in its native resolution *at all*.I try every couple of years (most recently late 2022), but currently I’m stuck on nVidia.

@zekjur @Amirography That sounds odd, given that NVIDIA is stuck at DisplayPort 2.0. No matter what resolution you have, modern AMD cards should be able to handle it with DP 2.1. I think it goes up to 10K60 uncompressed?

@zekjur @Amirography And it will get even worse. While AMD is working on adding HDR to Wayland, NVIDIA seems to have no such plans. Also NVIDIA doesn’t do VRR either on Linux. NVIDIA really is the reason why I need to replace my notebook. Half the features of my monitor I cannot use on Linux and it’s all only thanks to NVIDIA.

@zekjur @Amirography (Sorry if I sound bitter - that’s because I am. I bought an expensive monitor because I wanted a giant screen, 240 Hz and HDR. I could have paid a lot less for the 120 Hz non-HDR version. And I probably would have it only I had known that I get to use none of it on Linux just because NVIDIA decided to treat Linux users as 3rd class. The HW supports it fine on Windows. But even there it 50% crashes on boot if DSC is enabled on the monitor)

@js @Amirography Specs are one thing, driver support is another. When I got the monitor in 2017, I bought an AMD card that was spec'ed for 8K resolution, but it would only work with the Windows driver. To this day, I haven’t gotten AMD to work with this monitor on Linux, though. Same story for my brand-new Intel ARC A380 card.

@zekjur @Amirography What protocol do you need to drive your screen? I’m guessing it’s something less common? Since AMD does great on Linux from what I’ve seen.

@zekjur @Amirography > The UP3218K requires connecting two separate DisplayPort 1.4 cablesAh yeah support for that has always been poor. I have a 5K screen at work which also used two cables and support for that got dropped. I learned to never buy anything non-standard again. Since I suspect you don’t want to replace your screen with one that does 8K60 via a single cable in standard ways, I suppose you’re stuck :(. Sorry to hear.

@js @Amirography the problem is more severe: even if I wanted, I couldn’t, because there is no 8K monitor on the market that uses a single cable :/

@zekjur @Amirography Supposedly some 8K monitors with up to 165 Hz have been announced for Q1. And supposedly there already are some 8K60 monitors that use HDMI 2.1 instead of DP 2.1?

@zekjur @Amirography I see. Makes sense. The trend seems to be bigger and bigger - I’m on a 49" ultrawide monitor these days.
