Something I posted on Hacker NewsIt's time to kill the web browserhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34373479What I'm trying to say is an operating system independent display system is a good thing. What isn't good is how primitive the wrapper has stayed around finding, organizing and archiving what is out there, and the fact that the whole software system is one monolithic entity controlled by vertically integrated corporations who also happen to be providing devices and content stores. So, kill the monolithic application we call the web browser, separate the display part and start thinking about a better way to provide trust in both the access path to content, and the content itself.

@bitsavers One day I read that the web browser should run all of the apps, the other I read that they should be killed and replaced entirely, and then another one how they should essentially become Gemini ‒ it’s amazing what you find around here :blobcatderpy:

Is there such a thing as curated lists of reference material for ideas, like "replacements for web browsing"? Someone must have been thinking about this. I'm even having a hard time the past couple of weeks wrapping my head around current thinking of augmentation research around research. You start digging into "augmentation research" now and all people are talking about is machine learning, the singularity, and cyborgs. What I want are "reading lists from Smart People " :bloblul:"You can't save everything, where would you put it?"https://oldbytes.space/@bitsavers/109638111074037723

@xerz I'm hoping there will be some serious out of the box ideas that start to percolate here.

@bitsavers In that spirit, I just going to get into my 2¢: it’s kinda this, yet it needs to be deeply integrated as to feel one. Either you take the web and build new abstractions on top (more like the SOLID, Nostr and ActivityPub), or you redo the whole thing (more like Goblins or my ideal OS concept). Sadly, the former is the most likely to work out, but it could allow to transition into the latter, so we probably need a hybrid approach ‒ and critically, we need them to work with HTML semantics and URLs, because nobody likes a Flutter web app that pretends the outside world doesn’t exist. Interoperability is critical.I could go on about my concept for hours (not the one I have on Github btw), but nobody has asked me so far and I know it will fall into deaf ears otherwise. Meanwhile @cwebber has learned faster than me that actions speak louder than words, so please ask her about Goblins.

@bitsavers (in case I haven’t conveyed my idea well enough, the point is that a platform is made so that it’s, say, “web-native”, but using the web as a frontend is optional ‒ then gradually, you could turn the tables, so you can stop using a web browser and instead access web resources from within that new platform until it becomes the superior choice to go platform-native)

@bitsavers “Gopher, souped up and modernised just a little“ really does the job imho ‒ and also these Wikipedia screenshots
