A belated, but no less enthusiastic and heartfelt #introduction: I fell in love with the Internet over the creation of my first website on Yahoo Geocities in the 1990s, and developed a seething hate for social media as I experienced the deterioration of Facebook and Twitter and, one by one, deleted my accounts there. But before that, I published one piece about my intense involvement on social media in the anthropology journal American Ethnologist (https://anthrosource.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/amet.12342). 1/4

@Pattyagray Nice! I wish I could still find my old Geocities site. I was in the "Silicon Valley" neighborhood if I remember correctly.

I was grieving for the loss of what social media could have been, until I made the leap to Lifeboat Mastodon, and now I am full of hope as I watch the lifeboat getting built out into a majestic sailing ship. I am not a coder, but I feel so comfortable among them that I chose indieweb.social as my Mastodon home when I migrated here in November 2022, and I am happily nestled snugly with no intention of moving instances. 2/4

I’m in my third career; the first was independent filmmaking and film editing (my claim to fame was working on Sam Raimi’s film The Evil Dead II); the second was academia (my BA is in Journalism / Communication and my MA/PhD are in anthropology); and the third is freelance writing and editing (I started my own copyediting business called Rutabaga Writer, and I am now climbing the latter of literary publishing just as I did for academic publishing). 3/4

@Pattyagray I can't find any of my stuff before 2001 on the Wayback Machine and that was after I moved on from Geocities.
